Geographic Information Systems Technologists and Technicians
Assist scientists or related professionals in building, maintaining, modifying, or using geographic information systems (GIS) databases. May also perform some custom application development or provide user support.
Responsibilities
Perform geospatial data building, modeling, or analysis using advanced spatial analysis, data manipulation, or cartography software.
Collect, compile, or integrate GIS data such as remote sensing or cartographic data for inclusion in map manuscripts.
Design or coordinate the development of integrated GIS spatial or non-spatial databases.
Perform integrated or computerized GIS analyses to address scientific problems.
Meet with clients to discuss technical specifications, customized solutions, or operational problems.
Confer with users to analyze, configure, or troubleshoot applications.
Design, program, or model GIS applications or procedures.
Prepare training materials for, or make presentations to, GIS users.
Maintain or modify existing GIS databases.
Interpret aerial or ortho photographs.
Assist users in formulating GIS requirements or understanding implications of alternatives.
Apply 3D or 4D technologies to geospatial data for new or different analyses or applications.
Provide technical expertise in GIS technology to clients or users.
Document, design, code, or test GIS models, internet mapping solutions, or other applications.
Produce data layers, maps, tables, or reports using spatial analysis procedures or GIS technology, equipment, or systems.
Perform computer programming, data analysis, or software development for GIS applications, including maintenance of existing systems or R&D for future enhancements.
Select cartographic elements needed for effective presentation of information.
Convert or transfer data using specialized applications program software.
Develop specialized software routines or internet-based GIS databases to customize geographic information.
Enter data into GIS databases using coordinate geometry, keyboard entry, digitizing, scanning, or vector conversion.
Create visual representations of geospatial data, including 3D renderings or plot creation.
Make recommendations regarding upgrades, considering the implications of new or revised GIS software, equipment, or applications.
Review existing or incoming data for currency, accuracy, usefulness, quality, or completeness of documentation.
