invites applications for a Landscape Designer to support the Early Childhood Health Outdoors (ECHO) model within the Grow Outdoors South Carolina (GO SC) initiative. This term assignment lasts from October 2025 to August 2028, with a strong possibility of extension.
Overview The National Wildlife Federation unites Americans to conserve wildlife, restore habitats, and expand outdoor opportunities. The Landscape Designer will collaborate with ECHO and GO SC teams to transform early childhood outdoor spaces into naturalized environments that spark play and learning.
Principal Duties
Collaborate with ECHO and GO SC teams to develop landscape designs, supplemental materials, and programmatic supports for licensed childcare centers across South Carolina.
Apply evidence‑based design principles to a variety of site contexts, creating developmentally appropriate, custom solutions driven by programmatic needs.
Support design work, including base maps, illustrative plans, schematic designs, and planting plans.
Collaborate on community presentations, training, and professional development offerings for educators and community engagement workshops.
Develop cost calculations, phasing recommendations, and conduct site analysis, measurements, and photo documentation.
Coordinate participatory design workshops, training events, and volunteer workdays.
Provide construction technical assistance and project management support to ensure design delivery timelines and goals.
Prepare supplemental materials for grant reports and maintain cloud‑based filing systems.
Travel to sites located throughout South Carolina and, periodically, outside the state for trainings, conferences, and events.
Qualifications
Degree or equivalent professional experience in landscape architecture, landscape design, horticultural science, environmental design, architecture, urban planning, or related field.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Bridge). Preferred knowledge of Land F/X, ArcGIS, and SketchUp.
Proven ability to independently manage tasks, with strong work ethic and organizational skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, including public speaking experience and the ability to effectively communicate ideas verbally and graphically.
Demonstrated ability to create effective design solutions at a variety of scales and contexts.
Experience or interest in designing landscapes for children and/or families.
Knowledge of native landscape plants and sustainable landscape design practices preferred.
Photography and graphic design skills preferred. Capable of engaging and bolstering marginalized voices in your work.
Physical Requirements Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example, using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about the workspace. The position requires mobility, including moving materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
Location and Work Mode Based out of Columbia, SC. The employee may work in the office or in a hybrid manner, to be decided jointly with their supervisor.
Compensation and Benefits Salary range: $55,000 – $63,500 per year. Benefits include paid time off, unlimited wellbeing, family and medical leave, health insurance, mental health support, pet insurance, and a retirement plan with match.
