Job Summary The Department of English, Rhetoric and Writing, and Media Communication at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Rhetoric and Writing beginning August 2026. We are a vibrant, collegial faculty committed to excellent teaching, collaboration, and mentorship. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching classes within the Rhetoric and Writing program as part of the English BA and general education composition classes. Applicants should be able to teach a broad range of courses in Rhetoric and Composition. Special consideration will be given to candidates who can teach in the following areas: digital writing and rhetoric, multimodal rhetoric, visual, sonic, and computational rhetorics, media studies, digital humanities, and/or public rhetorics. Candidates must have a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarship. The position reports to the Department Chair of English, Rhetoric and Writing, and Media Communication.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate courses within the Rhetoric and Writing program and general education composition classes.

Develop and maintain an engaging learning environment emphasizing free discussion and critical thinking.

Employ culturally responsive teaching pedagogies and approaches.

Evaluate student progress and grade work.

Foreground diversity issues in curriculum.

Recruit and retain students.

Advise and mentor students during advising sessions.

Maintain an active program of personal scholarly advancement including presentations and publication.

Maintain professional conduct and ethics.

Serve to department, college, and University, including committees.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition, or related field; ABD considered with firm defense date.

Two years of college‑level teaching experience.

Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarship.

Experience in digital writing, multimodal rhetoric, visual, sonic, computational rhetorics, media studies, digital humanities, public rhetorics preferred.

Scholarship and pedagogy involving diversity practices and support for non‑heritage and multilingual writers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
