Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) seeks a qualified and dynamic Instructional Designer to support faculty in the design, development, and implementation of quality technology-enhanced instruction across all modalities. This position plays a critical role in administering the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), facilitating faculty professional development, promoting best practices in online pedagogy, and supporting classroom technology integration. The Instructional Designer collaborates closely with academic leadership, faculty, and IT to improve teaching and learning effectiveness throughout the college.

Administers and supports the Canvas LMS, including configuration, troubleshooting, faculty support, and vendor coordination

Develops and delivers professional development workshops and individualized coaching to faculty on instructional design, online teaching pedagogy, and classroom technology

Assists faculty in the design and revision of online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced face-to-face courses using evidence-based practices

Leads initiatives and training programs that promote accessibility, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Quality Matters (QM) standards

Supports classroom technology integration through training, documentation, and consultation

Develops and maintains instructional resources and user guides in a variety of media formats

Collaborates with Academic Affairs and the Teaching & Learning Committee to identify development needs and implement effective faculty training solutions

Participates in college-wide and system-wide committees related to instructional technology and online learning

Conducts research and stays current with emerging educational technologies, trends, and best practices

Provides analytics and reporting on faculty usage of instructional tools, LMS performance, and training outcomes

Applies knowledge of learning theory, instructional design principles, accessibility standards, and adult learning to course development and faculty training

Troubleshoots LMS and classroom technology issues and liaises with IT and external vendors to resolve them

Develops and implements strategic plans and policies that promote excellence in teaching with technology

Engages with a wide range of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, administrators, and technology providers

Improves instructional quality and course design across SVCC

Increases faculty confidence and competence in using instructional technology

Enhances student engagement and success through improved course delivery

Contributes to institutional goals related to online education, student success, and professional development

Serves as primary support for Canvas LMS administration and instructional design consultation

Independently designs and manages training programs and resources for faculty

Maintains accurate and accessible documentation, training materials, and records of faculty participation

Provides timely and effective support services in coordination with IT and academic departments

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Educational Technology, or a related field from an accredited institution

Demonstrated experience with Canvas or a similar LMS in a system administrator or advanced support role

Knowledge of best practices in online pedagogy, course design, and adult learning

Experience in faculty training and professional development within higher education

Familiarity with accessibility standards (ADA, Section 508) and Quality Matters guidelines

Strong technical skills with multimedia tools, video editing, and classroom technologies

Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines

Additional Considerations

Experience teaching in a Community College

Quality Matters certification (APPQMR, Peer Reviewer, or Facilitator)

Experience with VCCS systems and platforms (e.g., Canvas, SIS, Navigate, Zoom)

Experience designing or supporting HyFlex and hybrid learning environments

Familiarity with instructional technology used in classroom environments such as document cameras, interactive whiteboards, lecture capture, etc.
