Assistant Professor of Japanese at the University of New Mexico, full‑time tenure‑track, beginning August 10 2026. The position combines undergraduate instruction in Japanese language, literature, and culture, scholarly publication, and service to the College of Arts & Sciences and UNM’s interdisciplinary programs. Responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach intermediate and advanced levels of Japanese language, literature, and culture courses; advise undergraduates in the Japanese track of the East Asian Studies major; contribute to UNM’s interdisciplinary initiatives; pursue research in Japanese literary, cultural, visual, or media studies; and provide faculty service at the departmental and university level. Qualifications
Minimum Ph.D. in Japanese Literary or Cultural Studies or a closely related field such as Asian Studies, Media Studies, or Comparative Literature, with a research specialization in Japanese Studies, in hand by the date of application. Preferred Native or near‑native command of both Japanese and English. Demonstrated strengths in teaching Japanese using communicative methods. Strengths in teaching Japanese literary, cultural, or media studies at the undergraduate level. Demonstrated potential for scholarship in Japanese literary, cultural, and/or media studies, with a well‑defined research and publication trajectory. Ability to mentor undergraduate students. Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary programs in the department and at the university. A demonstrated commitment to cultivating understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.
