focuses on shaping and enhancing the credit union’s reputation and storytelling externally. The role drives comprehensive external communication efforts, positioning BECU positively with members, communities, and key stakeholders.
Pay Range The Target Pay Range for this position is $169,200.00–$206,700.00 annually. The full Pay Range is $131,800.00–$244,400.00 annually.

Impact You’ll Make The Director will lead public relations, organic social media, blog content, message development, leadership communications, media training, crisis communications, and reputation management. The role fosters agency and vendor relationships and cross‑functional internal collaborations.
What You’ll Do
Oversee the strategy, management, and execution of external communications and messaging to elevate BECU’s brand, reputation, and community initiatives.
Lead public and media relations programs, including content partnerships, thought leadership, and a 12‑month annual plan.
Build relationships with executives to counsel on communications needs, issue and reputation management, executive positioning, and priority external speaking events.
Partner with Marketing to influence external content opportunities that highlight BECU’s unique brand, signature events, and member value initiatives.
Oversee organic social media, social response strategies, and brand awareness across platforms and products.
Develop BECU.org’s blog strategy focused on personal finance content that empowers audiences and supports BECU’s business goals.
Direct metric development, research, tracking, and targeting related to key segments for external communications.
Manage relationships with external communications agencies, firms, and freelance resources to support strategy execution.
Serve as BECU’s lead media spokesperson and internal spokespersons for interviews and external source engagements.
Build and maintain relationships with key journalists, producers, and industry partners, and lead internal media training programs.
Lead crisis communication efforts and represent BECU in business continuity and crisis plans.
Represent BECU at industry events, trade shows, informational activities, and community forums.
Coach, mentor, and train staff, conduct personnel evaluations, and provide feedback.
Assist in the development and approval of the annual budget and strategic plans for the area of responsibility, managing expenditures to meet budgets.
Maintain thorough knowledge of credit union policies, and state and federal regulations for all products.
Document procedures for all functions and update as necessary.
Perform additional duties as assigned. Full‑time hours required, with additional hours as necessary. Occasional travel required.

Minimum Qualifications
B.A. or B.S. degree in public relations, journalism, marketing, communications, or equivalent experience.
Minimum of eight years of experience in the communications field, engaging in strategy development and implementation, and managing external communications programs.
Minimum of five years of management experience.
Desired Qualifications
Advanced degree preferred.
Exceptional creativity and conceptual communication skills.
Effective leadership and negotiation skills.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills to communicate with executive leadership, management, staff, and outside contacts.
Proven track record of leading successful public relations programs and teams, building effective relationships with reporters, and driving brand awareness and media coverage.
