Managing Editor – Indiana
Join our team located in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Responsibilities
Ensure delivery of compelling, relevant and accurate news stories to our readership.
Produce well‑thought‑out dailies and enterprise stories on the inner workings of state government, agencies and policymakers.
Arrange interviews with government officials and other information sources.
Review copy and correct errors in content, grammar and punctuation following AP style and the in‑house style guide.
Determine a story’s emphasis, length and format, organizing material accordingly.
Research and analyze background information to provide complete and accurate information.
Gather information about events through research, interviews, experience or attendance at political, social or other functions.
Pitch stories relevant to the local community.
Assist in developing and implementing editorial strategies to enhance audience engagement, increase readership and drive digital growth.
Elevate reporters’ stories by seizing opportunities for in‑depth enterprise stories with statewide, and at times national, reach.
Edit stories, graphics, pull quotes, infoboxes, etc., for content, errors and libel, taking into consideration AP style and the in‑house style guide.
Essential Qualifications
5+ years of professional experience as a reporter or editor.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
Prior professional experience leading a team.
Knowledge of digital literacy, multimedia platforms and methods.
Knowledge of data‑based reporting.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Adherence to the journalism code of ethics.
Persistent research conduct and editorial editing skills.
Analytical and metric‑based coverage decision skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in government reporting.
Experience in a start‑up organization.
Compensation & Benefits
The annual salary range for this role is $85,000 to $97,000 for candidates working from Indianapolis, Indiana. Benefits include competitive salary and comprehensive package.
Employment Details
In‑office work most days out of the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
