Overview
Attorney - Editor at the Supreme Court of Ohio. The Attorney-Editor edits and proofs Supreme Court opinions in preparation for publication, prepares and posts opinions and other documents to the Court’s website, and supports related editorial work.
What You’ll Do
Edit Supreme Court draft opinions for approval of the authoring justice by reviewing the opinion to verify facts, confirm validity of legal principles, ensure correct legal terminology, ensure logical and orderly flow of ideas, conform to Court’s style, remove ambiguous or misleading material, and check the accuracy of legal citations, citation form, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Review suggested revisions with justices’ staffs and master commissioners.
Prepare headnotes for Supreme Court opinions.
Proofread galleys of opinions and proofs of Ohio Official Reports advance sheets to correct errors for the bound volume after publication of Supreme Court opinions.
Prepare and post case announcements and Supreme Court slip opinions to the Court’s website; coordinate receipt of opinions from the Court of Claims and District Courts of Appeals and post them to the Court’s website; answer questions from judges and staff of those courts.
Conduct legal and special research.
Assist the Reporter of Decisions and other Reporter’s Office staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
What We’re Looking For
Active law license in good standing in any jurisdiction. Must be properly admitted to the practice of law and in good standing with the appropriate admitting authority of any state or territory of the United States.
Minimum of two years’ experience as a licensed attorney.
Substantial experience in editing and proofreading, preferably of legal documents.
Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and spelling and the ability to implement proper style, diction, and citations to authorities.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently and to use technical and legal language.
Substantial skills in legal research and legal writing.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word and Outlook), the internet, and legal-research databases (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis).
Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
Ability to effectively interact and communicate with supervisors, co-workers, justices, judges, other public officials and employees, attorneys, Court personnel, and the public.
