Overview
We’re seeking a seasoned and strategic Director of External Communications to lead our public relations team and elevate our brand presence across earned media channels. The Director will determine, coordinate and execute comprehensive Bancorp-level external communications initiatives that support Fifth Third Bank’s strategic objectives. The Director is both a team leader and a doer, capable of driving strategic external communications and media relations plans from conception to completion. This role reports to the Chief Communications Officer.
Responsibilities
Lead, manage, and develop the External Communications team, balancing strategy and execution. Help prioritize projects and initiatives while sharing in the work.
Balance high-level strategic thinking with deep attention to detail.
Lead PR and external positioning for the Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer, and Chief Marketing Officer.
Lead special projects as they arise, including acquisitions/divestitures, government shutdowns, natural disasters, litigation defense, and other corporate matters requiring strategic communications support.
Media Relations: lead and execute the external communications strategy with a strong emphasis on media relations; promote the bank’s strategy and leadership while protecting reputation; manage proactive and reactive media relations, crisis and issues management, thought leadership, and special projects.
Develop and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and influencers across national, regional, and trade media;
Serve as a hands-on media liaison, pitching stories, managing media inquiries, and preparing spokespeople for interviews;
Monitor media coverage and industry trends to identify opportunities to raise Fifth Third’s profile;
Create and execute award nominations for key executives and projects to build visibility (CFO, CIO, CMO).
Strategic Communications: develop a comprehensive editorial calendar for external communications and ensure smooth execution and integrated planning.
Plan, edit, and create content for external channels (press releases, media advisories, op-eds, briefing documents, leadership presentations, newsletters, speeches, and related materials).
Crisis & Issues Management: prepare plans and implement strategies to manage crises, including business continuity efforts for events such as natural disasters and government shutdowns.
Collaboration & Counsel: advise leadership on strategy, build credibility, and execute with strong business acumen and exceptional content creation.
Stakeholder Engagement & Measurement: develop campaigns for multiple audiences and channels; review metrics to inform recommendations; continually adopt new tools and best practices to increase impact.
Writing & Storytelling: elevate team writing and storytelling, providing edits to tighten and strengthen copy.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Lead, manage and develop the External Communications team, including providing feedback, growth opportunities, and recognition.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Required
Bachelors’ degree required. Experience in banking and/or financial services required.
15+ years in media relations and corporate communications, with integrated programs across internal/external communications, executive positioning, events, thought leadership, and social media.
Experience managing teams with differing priorities and translating business strategies into accountable priorities.
Ability to develop and execute multi-channel programs with measurable outcomes.
Strategic problem solving, consensus-building, and adaptability under tight deadlines.
Strong attention to detail, writing and editing skills, and the ability to improve content quality.
Ability to bring order to chaos and drive continuous improvement.
Compensation & Benefits Total Base Pay Range 119,500.00 - 256,900.00 USD Annual. This role is eligible for incentive compensation based on company, line of business and/or individual performance. Benefits and other compensation details available on the 53.com Careers page.
