Overview

Head of Design, Spacecraft Mechanical Systems — we are partnering with our client to find a Head of Design to lead and manage their growing spacecraft mechanical design organization. This pivotal role demands a blend of deep technical mastery in spacecraft structures and strong organizational leadership. As the design authority, you will be responsible for defining the structural architecture, developing key design processes, and ensuring mission success from concept through launch. This is an onsite position located north of Seattle, Washington, and relocation assistance will be provided for the right candidate. Head of Design, Spacecraft Mechanical Systems Responsibilities

Serve as the primary

design authority

for spacecraft mechanical systems and interfaces. Own the spacecraft mechanical and structural architecture. Lead mechanical design from concept through flight qualification. Oversee the design and integration of mechanisms, payload interfaces, and bus structural subsystems. Lead and expand the Design Engineering team, including structural, mechanical, and CAD engineers. Process & Technical Standards

Establish and maintain design standards, configuration control, and

CAD/PLM workflows . Expert-level proficiency with NX and Teamcenter is a must-have requirement

. Implement best practices in

tolerance analysis, GD&T (ASME Y14.5) , and design-for-manufacture. Drive design reviews and ensure design compliance with structural qualification requirements. Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing mechanical and structural engineering team. Develop cross-functional processes connecting mechanical design with propulsion, avionics, and electrical integration. Basic Qualifications

Experience:

8+ years

of professional experience in spacecraft structural and mechanical design. Software Expertise:

Expert-level proficiency with CAD systems and large assembly management ( NX / Teamcenter required ). Design Heritage:

Proven track record owning spacecraft primary and secondary structure designs from concept through launch. Technical Depth:

Strong understanding of spacecraft load paths, margin philosophy, and material selection. Standards:

Deep knowledge of drafting standards,

GD&T (ASME Y14.5) , and tolerance stack-up analysis. Education:

Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline (Master’s preferred). Preferred Experience

Experience leading design efforts for satellites

>200 kg class . Demonstrated ability to establish and scale design processes and tools within a startup or growth-phase company. Strong understanding of composite, bonded, and additive manufacturing processes Seniority level
