Marwen Emerging Teaching Artist
Status: Temporary Part-Time (In-Person)
Reports to: Senior Manager of Learning and Assessment
About Marwen Marwen educates and inspires young people to nurture their growth and build their futures through art and community. Founded in 1987, the no-cost studio and pathway programs exist for young people in Chicago who want to explore visual arts and do not have access to arts programming due to financial and systemic barriers. The Marwen Emerging Teaching Artist (META) is a temporary, part-time position. META’s provide studio support to Teaching Artists and are mentored by Marwen staff to further develop their teaching artist practice and experience. Rooted in the core values of Creative Youth Development, META is a commitment to supporting young people’s stories, ideas, and dreams through creative expression and honoring their lived experience. META fosters youth centered, inclusive, supportive, and collaborative teaching artist environments that support the facilitation of visual arts programming for Chicago’s young people in grades 6-12.
Core Responsibilities Provide studio support for two courses in Marwen’s year-round visual arts program offerings, supporting lead teaching artists in Spring and Summer terms
Be an advocate for youth
Support in class documentation of young people artwork
Support in studio reset and maintenance during class session
Participate in professional development and peer learning, including group skill building and mentorship feedback, trainings on creative youth development
Lead Marwen workshops for youth in 6th-12th grades under the supervision of Marwen staff
Engage in post term reflection
The ideal candidate will have 1-3 year experience teaching or working directly with youth
Skills and experience in an artistic practice such as painting, drawing, ceramics, fashion, digital photography, printmaking/print media, darkroom or photography
Experience in these specific areas is a plus; ceramics (wheel throwing), fashion (garment design and construction), sewing machine use, and darkroom photography (film processing)
Understanding of and alignment with the principles of creative youth development
Experience with collaborative environments, including cohorts, co-facilitation models, and teaching teams
The compensation for this position is $23.10 per hour.
Hours per Term: Spring 2026 Term (61 hrs), Summer 2026 Term (54 hrs)
