Pediatrics Chair Job Summary:

The Sr. Communications Specialist will serve as communications liaison for the Department. This position will be responsible for serving as the sole communications liaison for the Department. Responsibilities include raising awareness of programs and initiatives to internal and external audiences, independently developing, editing and distributing monthly newsletters to faculty, staff and trainees; designing and producing presentation materials and executive communications for Department Chair and other departmental leadership (Monroe Carell/VUMC Board presentations, State of the Department, etc.); planning, serving as project manager for, and executing departmental faculty meetings; and producing infographics and marketing collateral for a variety of departmental needs. The role also includes training departmental administrative staff in new communication tools. Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of online content. This position is fully responsible for the management of the department website in partnership with Marketing & Engagement, including regular updates to content and bi-yearly reviews. It monitors and maintains the website to ensure information is accurate and available to prospective faculty, staff, and trainees, and independently solicits content in line with institutional guidelines. Manages departmental programs and events to support the department’s key missions, including planning and executing departmental and ad hoc events such as the annual Pediatric Research Retreat and other scientific conferences as requested by the Chair. Develops and manages marketing/communications strategy in collaboration with departmental and organizational leadership. This includes writing executive communications for the Department Chair and Chief Business Officer and coordinating with Strategic Marketing and News & Communications on campaigns for U.S. News Best Children’s Hospitals and related events. Acts as department liaison to Marketing and News & Communications teams and represents Pediatrics on related committees. May include travel and writing pediatric news stories for institutional publications. Manages feedback sources for the Chair’s Office (e.g., department suggestion box, Paper of the Month nominations) and serves as the primary departmental contact for feedback. This position does not directly supervise staff; however, it may involve supervising an unpaid communications intern during a 10-week summer internship and may involve supervising student assistants as needed.
