Overview
Court Reporter - Official Certified Shorthand Reporter (D3 Location TBD) role with the State of Iowa - Executive Branch. The Iowa Judicial Branch in District 3 seeks applicants for Certified Court Reporters to record court proceedings and provide official transcripts for the subdistrict 3A counties (Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto) and subdistrict 3B counties (Crawford, Ida, Monona, Plymouth, Sioux, Woodbury). This position will create verbatim records, maintain the integrity of court records and transcripts, and transmit certified transcripts in accordance with Iowa Court Rules. It may involve travel within the judicial district as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Record court proceedings and create verbatim records using shorthand (stenotype) or approved dictation methods.
- Transcribe shorthand records and notes into certified transcripts in accordance with Iowa Court Rules.
- Maintain and secure exhibits during court proceedings; file legible notes and certified transcripts with the court clerk's office.
- Perform clerical duties for the judicial officer as needed (e.g., jury instructions, orders, opinions, correspondence).
- Maintain shorthand reporter certification and complete continuing education as required by Iowa Court Rules Chapter 46.
- Travel to other counties within the judicial district to record proceedings as assigned.
- Communicate professionally with a variety of court users and ensure accuracy and integrity of court records.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency
- One of the following: Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) from NCRA, Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) from NVRA, or completion of a court reporter program
- Must obtain an Iowa Certified Shorthand Reporter license within one year of employment and maintain current certification
- Ability to purchase and maintain court reporting stenotype machines and/or verbatim recording equipment and software
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to take notes in shorthand or use stenotype or approved dictation devices
- Knowledge of court procedures, rules, and policies
- Knowledge of legal and medical terminology
- Excellent written communication and attention to detail
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and meet deadlines
- Strong time management and organizational skills; travel as needed

Employment Details
- Pay range: $30.59 - $48.87 per hour
- Contract-covered, FLSA non-exempt position
- Starting salary at the base of the pay range; adjustments may be made for relevant experience
- Position classified as Court Reporter; selected candidate will fit the duties assigned
