Position Summary Staff Nurse I is accountable for delivering patient care using the Nursing Process and Relationship‑Based Care model. The nurse provides direct patient care, enhances patient outcomes through evidence‑based practice, and serves as an interdisciplinary team member to fulfill unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities Clinical
Completes required orientation program and unit‑specific competencies.
Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and patient/family input.
Shares information and collaborates with the healthcare team to promote effective patient care.
Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice nurses, providing appropriate interventions and documenting accurately in the electronic medical records.
Engages patient and/or family to develop an appropriate educational plan.
Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to changing patient needs.
Delegates tasks to support personnel per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides feedback.
Demonstrates commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes.
Other duties as assigned.
Professional/Leadership
Advocates for patients, families, the community, and the nursing profession.
Integrates evidence‑based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide quality patient care.
Uses the hospital’s acuity tool and electronic scheduling tool for optimal staffing and patient assignments.
Supports Shared Leadership engagement.
Participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities.
Maintains RN licensure, BLS, and other required unit‑specific certifications.
Participates in staff meetings, nursing unit advisory committees, hospital‑wide councils, and other meetings.
Assumes charge nurse duties when assigned.
Provides feedback to the healthcare team regarding performance.
Organizational
Adheres to UI Health’s Code of Conduct.
Treats patients, families, staff, and visitors with respect and dignity.
Follows nursing time, overtime, and attendance policies.
Completes electronic learning modules and related programs by the assigned dates.
Complies with TB, flu, and fit‑testing requirements.
Uses communication channels to resolve patient care problems.
Identifies recurring clinical problems and participates in problem‑solving.
Education/Research
Collaborates with other nurses to promote positive learning experiences.
Serves as preceptor and/or resource to nursing staff and students.
Accesses UI Health intranet and Outlook for policy updates.
Supports nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts.
Engages in continuous professional growth and development.
Reporting Structure
Works independently within nursing practice scope. The Clinic Director and Administrative Nurse III provide guidance and feedback. Performance is evaluated annually and more frequently as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Licensed Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois (R.N.).
Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit‐specific certifications.
Effective communication skills.
Intermediate computer skills, proficiency with the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Excellent attendance and professional history.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 1–2 years ambulatory nursing experience.
