The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, award-winning newspapers in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia, are seeking a Community Editor to help guide papers in both Wheeling and Martins Ferry, Ohio. This editor will work collaboratively with the managing editor to assist in overseeing news production for the Intelligencer, Wheeling News-Register and Times Leader in Martins Ferry. He/she will marshal night operations in the combined newsroom to make sure editions are received on deadline to the production team. He/she will be responsible for late-night breaking news coverage.
Specific roles
The Community Editor will:
– Meet daily with the managing editor to discuss news coverage from earlier in the day, what is still to come that night and responsibilities for that editor that night.
– Proof pages for Wheeling and Martins Ferry papers, editing for accuracy and directing page designers to make changes to both stories/design as needed.
– Work closely with page design team, directing changes needed due to late breaking news and/or relaying directives from managing editor for changes.
– Monitor social media and other news sites (TV stations, etc.) as well as monitor police scanner for any late-breaking news, and direct reporters to cover that news as needed.
– Schedule stories/links to Facebook each night to post for the morning.
– Alert the managing editor about issues with reporters’ copy that managing editor can discuss with reporters the next day.
– Be responsible for writing 4-5 stories per week.
This role is perfect for a reporter with a few years of experience who wants to transition into newsroom leadership.
The Wheeling area is a great mix of urban and outdoor activities that sits just about an hour away from Pittsburgh.
