Position Description St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Part Time Library Assistant for the Hastings Branch Library, of the St. Johns County Public Library System. This position will work 24 hours weekly including weekends and occasional evenings. This position is assigned primarily to the Circulation Desk and requires strong customer service skills.
SJCPLS encourages a love of literature, the arts, and lifelong learning by providing a variety of information, resources, and entertainment to the community. SJCPLS serves all areas of St. Johns County, including St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fruit Cove, and Hastings. The Library System has six branches, two bookmobiles, and offers books-by-mail service. In addition to books, periodicals, and online databases, SJCPLS offers computer access, notary services, Inter-Library Loan, access to a Seed Library, test proctoring, and many volunteer opportunities. The Library System also offers a dynamic range of programming for adults, teens, and children.
Employees work in a team-oriented environment and are responsible for assisting with library circulation, reference, youth and adult service areas.
The Hastings Branch Library is seeking a Part Time Library Assistant who is energetic and has great customer service skills. The Hastings Branch is unique in its own way, it is located in a small town where you come to know people by their names. Our staff's work is sometimes more than shelving books, we help with resumes, job applications and setting up personal devices. Our staff's working hours vary: Tuesday and Thursday's we are open until 7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday's open until 6 p.m. and Saturday until 3 p.m.
Examples of Duties The ideal Part Time Library Assistant candidate must possess St. Johns County's core values of Dedication, Openness, Adaptability, Visionary, Fiscal Responsibility, Integrity, and Humility and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to: Assists with providing reader's advisory, reference and general information to patrons; assists in providing assistance and instruction regarding the use of databases, catalogs, and computer applications. Assists patrons at circulation desk; checks materials in and out; registers patrons; processes hold requests; collects fines and fees. Empties book drop. Collects and compiles statistics, as assigned. Follows cash management procedures. Assists in the assessment and repair of damaged items. Shelves circulated and in-house materials; reads shelves to ensure accuracy of material placement. Works a rotating schedule to include weekends, evenings and holidays or at other branches as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Candidates for the Part Time Library Assistant are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification. Must have one year of customer service or library experience. College education may be substituted for experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others. Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language. Must be able to operate a computer.

The Part Time Library Assistant position consists of 28 hours per week. The schedule for this position will rotate, and includes evening and weekend shifts. Is this schedule acceptable to you as presented?

Working at the public library requires a lot of physical movement. Picking up book drop requires bending over and lifting out heaving library materials to organize on carts, shelving requires repeatedly squatting to the floor and reaching up high, working the Circulation Desk requires standing for up to two hours at a time multiple hours a day. Heavy carts of library materials have to move throughout the building repeatedly. Fine motor skills are required, too, so that items are shelved correctly and that requires mental and visual focus. Additionally, although we are able to do some work in staff-only areas, most of our work is completed in view and in the same area as patrons who watch and can hear everything we do. Is this type of working environment acceptable to you as described?
