Build precision that keeps the lights on and missions flying
Step into a typical day at Pioneer Motor Bearing Company, a fourth‑generation family business in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Your morning begins by reviewing complex drawings and specifications for a fluid‑film bearing repair. You plan your setups, verify tolerances, and choose the right tooling. By midday, you’re turning and milling to spec on manual and CNC equipment, checking every critical dimension with micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, and surface gauges. In the afternoon, you collaborate with teammates, perform a minor adjustment on a setup, and hand off a flawless part—ready to help power plants run stronger and defense assets stay mission‑ready.
Our manufacturing and repair teams support large rotating equipment used in power generation, while our PMB Machine Works division serves defense and aerospace with precision‑machined components. We thrive on teamwork, clear communication, and a drive to improve.
What you’ll do
- Manufacture and inspect precision components and tooling from blueprints, sketches, drawings, and verbal instructions.
- Operate mills, engine lathes, drill presses, grinders, jig bores, VTLs, and related equipment; perform accurate setups and minor equipment repairs.
- Apply shop math and geometry for layouts, offsets, fits, and tolerances.
- Use precision metrology (micrometers, vernier calipers, surface gauges, dial indicators) to hold tight tolerances.
- Maintain a clean, safe work area while meeting quality and efficiency targets.
What makes you a great fit
- Technical degree from a trade school/community college; or 2+ years related experience/training; or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
- Comfort reading and interpreting technical procedures plus company, customer, and governmental specifications and regulations.
- Familiarity with Okuma, Hyundai, Bullard VTL, Fanuc, and similar machine tools/controls.
- Clear communicator who can present information and respond to questions from managers and coworkers.
- Strong math skills: proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume; practical algebra and geometry.
- Knowledge of machining processes for bearing manufacturing/repair: cutting fluids, surface finishes, tolerances, turning, drilling, milling, and abrasive processes.
- General materials knowledge: steels, nonferrous metals, and alloys.
- Ability to interpret complex technical drawings.
- Military experience is a plus.
