Library Archivist – Dr. Robert K. Jabs School of Business

The Library Archivist manages the two archival collections held by the Annie Gabriel Library: the Southern Baptist Depository and Archive, which documents the life and history of the Southern Baptist denomination, and the California Baptist University Queenie Simmons Archive, which houses materials related to the life and history of CBU.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize and catalog archival holdings in a manner consistent with archival standards, determining the appropriate level and type of arrangement and description needed.
  • Maintain an electronic inventory, register, or other finding aid for archival holdings.
  • Develop and implement appropriate preservation and conservation procedures for archival materials.
  • Coordinate the copying, digitization, or reformatting of archival materials for preservation and access.
  • Prepare statistics and reports for the Archives Department as needed.
  • Work with the Collection Development Librarian to acquire monographs related to Southern Baptist life and history.
  • Participate in the development of annual library budget planning for Archives funding and work with the Library Director to manage the Archives budget.
  • Screen archival holdings for potentially sensitive materials and coordinate access procedures for these materials.
  • Develop and keep current written procedures and manuals related to Archives processes.
  • Provide Archives research services and assistance to library patrons.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise the Archives Department student workers.
  • Manage the selection, acquisition, and other collection development related activities of items for the Southern Baptist Depository and Archive, and the CBU Queenie Simmons Archive.
  • Develop displays containing Archives holdings.
  • Represent the Archives with the California Baptist Historical Society and other relevant external organizations related to the life and history of Southern Baptists.
  • Keep current on contemporary standards, procedures, and practices related to Archives processes.
  • Supervise the training, assignment, and general oversight of student workers in the Archives Department.

  • Knowledge of the history of CBU and the Southern Baptist Convention.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of Business English, arithmetic, general office methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple projects.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent telephone courtesy, knowledge, and experience.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and maintain record‑keeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints and concerns.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard or other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work Environment

The work environment is a typical interior/office setting with moderate noise level and minimal exposure to health or safety hazards.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university (additional degree or specialization in archives preferred); one to two years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Employment Information

Employment type: Temporary.
Salary: $68,361.12 – $109,244.16.
