Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking a Library Assistant for the Circulation Section at the Port Orange Regional Library. This position supports the public at the checkout desk, teaches library users how to use the self-checkout station, assists with checking in materials, processes incoming new materials, manages patron reservations, and participates in collection management in the stacks. The role requires spending at least 50% of time in direct service to library users, at the public service desk, as a rover, or as an ambassador. May assist with displays and programs as needed.
Responsibilities
- Perform paraprofessional library work for public desk service or for cataloging, classifying, and indexing library materials.
- Assist with patron accounts, instruct and direct patrons to the use and location of materials, answer basic library questions or refer appropriately.
- Use the integrated library system, online databases, the Internet, and the electronic catalog; may assist with maintenance of library equipment, software, and hardware.
- Assist with training staff and/or volunteers in specialized areas under the direction of a Library Associate, Library Specialist, or Librarian.
- Assist librarians in the operation of Children’s, Circulation, Computer/AV, Reference, or Technical Services sections.
- Provide front-line, telephone, and/or electronic service to citizens and visitors.
- Register new patrons, charge/discharge library items, resolve patron accounting matters, retrieve materials, manage inventory, collect fines/fees.
- Perform branch or system-wide processing functions or data entry for Reference, Children’s Services, Computer/AV, the Library Support Center, etc.
- Open or close an assigned section, shelve materials, perform shelf-reading, and locate reserved or overdue materials.
- Under the direction of a librarian, assist with the preparation and implementation of various adult, teen, or children’s programs.
- Assist with daily and/or weekly money deposits.
- Attend workshops or meetings as required.
- Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and two (2) years of customer service experience, OR experience as a Library Assistant or equivalent position. A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the minimum experience.
Notes for Candidates
- Must be able to work nights and weekends.
- Will be required to complete a pre-employment skills test.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire; must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire and maintain thereafter.
- Knowledge of library techniques including shelving, sorting, alphabetization, and the Dewey Decimal system.
- Knowledge of computer applications as applied to library services.
- Knowledge of money counting procedures; ability to count/tabulate coins and bills to determine cash totals and make change.
- Knowledge of data needed on checks and ability to read names, account numbers, amounts, and related information on checks.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service; establish and maintain effective relationships with library staff, volunteers, and the public.
- Ability to maintain accurate records relating to collections and accounting for library materials.
- Ability to communicate concisely, both orally and in writing; teach library techniques and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, officials, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Physical Demands: Medium, repetitive work. Ability to see, hear and listen, talk; detailed finger dexterity; may require visual acuity for fine print. Ability to lift and push 25+ pounds, carry, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, stretch, twist, and climb. Ability to stand for long periods.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, and journals; memos, policies, and safety instructions. Ability to speak clearly and concisely; relate information, data, and detail verbally and in writing. Ability to perform basic mathematical and monetary functions.
