Basic Function
Assist the public at the Circulation desk and perform various activities to support library materials circulation.
Responsibilities
- Register patrons for library cards and maintain FNSB patron data and Alaska Library Catalog (ALC) consortium‑wide data.
- Answer questions and resolve patrons’ problems/complaints concerning FNSB and ALC‑wide overdues, cards, and materials.
- Contact other ALC libraries to coordinate activities and procedures, and relay other ALC library fee policies to FNSB patrons.
- Receive and record payments for library transactions; balance and reconcile payments daily.
- Compile information for statistical reporting and manage lost & found.
- Place reserves on requested materials, maintain the hold database, and notify patrons when materials are available; run, sort and prioritize holds.
- Schedule check‑in and check‑out of equipment and meeting rooms, auditorium, and conference rooms; ensure compliance with library standards.
- Assist patrons in use of typewriters, copiers, printing systems, and other in‑house equipment.
- Ensure that library materials are checked out/in and shelved accurately and timely; review damaged items and perform minor repairs; send to Collection Services if needed.
- Process lost and damaged items, prepare refund requests, and handle patron‑related billing processes.
- Participate in opening and closing procedures, monitor library safety, and report incidents immediately.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of public‑facing work, with at least one year in a library. One year beyond the page level preferred; an Associate Degree in Library Science may substitute experience.
- Proficient computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel; database preferred); ability to operate office machines (copier, scanner, fax, multi‑function printer).
- Experience with cash handling.
- PREFERRED: Valid driver’s license and satisfactory insurance under the Borough’s program; proof of insurance and driving record to be provided upon request.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to comprehend and execute instructions, work accurately and timely with frequent interruptions.
- Strong customer service skills under stressful situations with the public and staff.
- Curiosity and efficiency.
