Opportunity
The Reporter/Producer is a journalist who finds and cultivates compelling stories and unique angles, develops sources, anticipates and breaks news, and works collaboratively with reporters and producers to meet deadlines. The role includes mid‑ and long‑term enterprise stories and investigations across digital and audio platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops original and creative story ideas.
- Develops sources, investigates and researches to gather information, images, and audio.
- Prepares and presents original reporting for news spots, reports, and program segments.
- Reports, writes, and presents breaking news, news features, and enterprise and investigative pieces.
- Makes regular appearances on Chicago Public Media platforms.
- Participates in the editorial process.
- Voices stories, and depending on assignment, may voice program elements or briefings for on‑demand distribution.
- Performs production duties to ensure the successful execution of shows, newscasts, programs, podcasts, or other platforms (e.g., research, booking guests, creating web content, updating social media accounts, writing and producing interviews).
- Gathers, edits, and mixes audio or multimedia elements.
- Contributes to the execution of live events or broadcasts when required.
Minimum Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in an editorial, creative, and/or media production setting.
- Strong writing skills for broadcast web and promotional materials.
- Demonstrated experience and skill in writing broadcast copy, working with anchors, and producing audio for news programs.
- Demonstrated excitement for the news cycle and strong interest in the Chicago area news and talk ecosystem.
- Strong editorial judgment, resourcefulness, and research abilities.
- Knowledge of public radio, podcasts, and talk shows.
- Proven ability to consistently meet deadlines.
- Team player with high emotional intelligence and collaborative effectiveness.
- Ability to craft creative approaches to covering major news stories, issues, and ideas while executing detailed production tasks.
Education
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, humanities, or related field.
Compensation
The expected pay range is $61,200 – $66,000 per annum.
