Primarily remote, with occasional on-site work at program locations and the option to work from our Downtown Los Angeles office. Periodic local travel required.
Compensation:
$30–$62/hour, commensurate with experience. Approximately 20-40 hours per week.
Schedule:
Monday - Friday, with occasional evening, and weekend hours for performances, events, and board meetings.
About Children In Harmony Children in Harmony (CIH) is a global, non-profit 501c3 organization with the mission to provide the tools and resources youth need to make their voices heard through music-making, emotional learning and community engagement. CIH creates safe spaces for children and youth to embrace music-making and creative expression as a way of exploring emotional health. We believe helping young people understand and effectively communicate emotions is essential to helping develop resilience and the skills needed to navigate complex situations and a changing world. Through our flagship program, The Amani Project, we integrate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into music education, strengthening emotional intelligence, confidence, and community connection. Since 2017, CIH has reached thousands of youth worldwide and is soon launching in the U.S.
Position Overview The Director of Development & Communications (Consultant) will play a pivotal role in driving revenue growth and expanding visibility for Children in Harmony. Working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, this consultant will focus on executing CIH’s existing development and communications strategies and helping achieve established fundraising goals. This role is ideal for a high-performing, well-connected fundraiser who can immediately mobilize their network to secure new funding, sponsorships, and partnerships. The consultant will actively lead donor outreach, cultivate major gifts, manage campaigns, and oversee external communications that support fundraising success. This role requires a results-driven development professional with strong networks, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a demonstrated track record of securing diverse funding through thoughtful donor engagement and partnership cultivation.
Primary Responsibilities Development & Fundraising
Execute existing fundraising strategies across individual, corporate, foundation, and government funding sources.
Manage all aspects of the grants pipeline, including research, proposal drafting, submission, and reporting.
Cultivate and steward relationships with donors, sponsors, and institutional funders.
Oversee donor management and pipeline tracking.
Support campaign implementation for initiatives such as #MakeMusicDay, the Year-End Appeal, and other special events.
Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to expand major donor engagement and corporate sponsorships.
Track KPIs and report progress to leadership.
Communications
Create, manage, and post content across CIH’s social media platforms, and newsletters to ensure consistent, engaging, and mission-aligned messaging.
Develop digital, print, and visual materials that support fundraising campaigns, donor engagement, and organizational storytelling.
Produce and distribute donor communications, including donor acknowledgements, board fundraising collateral, press releases, eblasts, and event collateral.
Aid in maintaining CIH’s website using WordPress, updating content regularly with current programs, campaigns, and impact stories.
Assist with public relations efforts, leveraging media, influencer, and entertainment- industry connections to secure coverage and increase CIH’s visibility.
Build relationships with journalists, editors, and relevant outlets to highlight CIH’s mission and programming.
Track engagement analytics and adapt content to strengthen reach and visibility.
Qualifications
3-7+ years progressive nonprofit experience across fundraising, communications, including major gifts/campaigns.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced credential (e.g., CFRE) a plus.
Excellent tech skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace; familiarity with Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) a plus.
Demonstrated success securing major gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Expert writer/storyteller; strong brand and digital strategy chops.
Proficiency with donor CRMs (Funraise or similar) and email marketing; WordPress/Canva a plus.
Video editing skills a plus.
Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to write for a variety of audiences.
Ability to prioritize concurrent projects with high attention to detail.
Flexible schedule with availability on some nights and weekends.
Demonstrated interest in nonprofit work and a strong commitment to the mission of Children in Harmony.
Schedule This is a contract-based, hybrid role. Monday–Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours for performances, events, and board meetings. Work is primarily remote, with occasional in-person events or meetings, and the option to work from our office.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment Must be flexible working in a fast-paced, non-profit environment, and willing to use personal equipment such as cell phone and laptop/tablet. Must be willing to undergo clearances/ background checks for school and partner sites.
