Research Scientist - Process Design, Materials Simulation and AI Solutions in Manufacturing
We are seeking a dynamic Research Scientist to join our Process Integration & Design Research Group. The role contributes to technology strategy and helps shape the roadmap in advanced (including additive) manufacturing and sustainability. This group provides pre-development and research services including prototyping, technology evaluation and assessments in many areas of advanced digital manufacturing and circularity. It demonstrates the complete value chain needed for future manufacturing and clean energy solutions—covering materials simulation, electrochemical applications, data traceability for closed-loop control, recycling and life‑cycle analysis. The team is co-located in Charlotte, NC and Princeton, NJ, and collaborates with teams across the US and globally on Materials, Manufacturing, Automation Technologies, Simulation, Digital Twin, and Artificial Intelligence. Locations:
Princeton, NJ or Charlotte, NC (required travel between sites). Up to 5% global travel (primarily Germany) and up to 20% domestic travel. Responsibilities & Scope
Contribute to the group’s strategy and roadmap in advanced manufacturing and circularity. Develop tools and products for an efficient and transparent circular economy—eco‑design to recycling, tracking the entire product lifecycle. Leverage recycling, design/simulation, and validation testing to improve REE/CM extraction from end‑of‑life batteries and manufacturing scrap. Develop innovative, scalable AI solutions in manufacturing processes (design and integration). Carry out thermostructural and electrochemical simulations for materials performance, degradation, techno‑economic and life‑cycle analysis for fuel cells and battery technologies. Collaborate with process experts to integrate advanced sensors, nondestructive evaluation and digital solutions for material quality inspection and traceability in manufacturing. Build Siemens‑internal networks to acquire and lead research projects advancing technology and securing innovation. Collaborate with other research groups to extend scope and integrate comprehensive solutions. Interact closely with principals, R&D heads and technology field heads. Assist in external brand recognition—networking with industry experts, attending conferences, partnering with universities in the US. Basic Qualifications
Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field from an accredited university. 2+ years of experience applying AI tools to industrial data. 4+ years of experience in materials process knowledge with a focus on circularity and sustainability opportunities. 4+ years of experience working on clean energy solutions in academia, industry, or government/military. Experience in an independent technical role. Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future (U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder). Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in industrial robots for manufacturing. Flexibility and resourcefulness to work in a growing, dynamic, and international team with strong customer service orientation. Ability to present sophisticated technical topics clearly and moderate discussions, meetings, and projects. About Siemens
We are a global technology company focused on industry, infrastructure, transport, and healthcare. From resource‑efficient factories and resilient supply chains to smarter buildings, grids, and transportation, we create technology with purpose, adding real value for customers. Our Commitment to Equity and Inclusion
We value your unique identity and perspective. We are fully committed to providing equitable opportunities and building a workplace that reflects diverse society, while ensuring we attract the best talent based on qualifications, skills, and experience. Salary
$102,459 – $198,147 annually (10% variance).
