What We're Looking For HNTB’s growing Design‑Build (DB) organization seeks a Senior Drainage Design Manager. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience leading teams on fast‑paced transportation projects and subject‑matter expertise in hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management. This role produces high‑quality drainage deliverables, leads teams to meet HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance goals, and manages budget, schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, and client communications. The candidate will typically manage the drainage component for mega (5 M–25 M USD) or super‑mega (> 25 M USD) projects.

What You’ll Do

Develop project scope and fee quotation, and assist in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).

Serve as the primary client liaison and manage the project team to deliver scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and client satisfaction.

Perform technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.

Implement the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB’s Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA), lead the development and execution of the project management plan, and supervise and mentor team to overall project objectives.

Oversee project staffing, including recruitment, development, retention, succession, and performance reviews.

Partner with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to support business development, building client relationships, and pursuing mega and super‑mega projects in accordance with HNTB’s Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA); prepare proposals and presentations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 12 years of relevant experience.

4 years of successful management of engineering projects.

What You’ll Bring

Leadership of a drainage team delivering design plans on complex transportation infrastructure projects.

Experience in project team development of design modeling, calculations, plans, specs, and quality control.

Ability to work with other disciplines to assure fully integrated design.

Collaborative work with project management team and contracting partners for constructible design.

Experience developing cost estimates, identifying risks, and pursuing job projects.

Development of scopes, fees, and work plans for aggressive schedules.

Senior review of designs, proposals, fee estimates, scopes of work nationwide.

Expertise in hydrology and hydraulics design of surface water runoff collection and conveyance systems, stormwater management, open channel modeling, scour analysis, and mitigation measures.

Proficiency with industry software (MicroStation, InRoads Drainage, GEOPAK Drainage, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Storm CAD, HEC‑RAS 1D & 2D, SWMM, PondPack, Culvert Master, Flow Master, etc.).

What We Prefer

Master’s degree in Engineering.

15+ years of experience in hydrology, hydraulics, and stormwater management on fast‑paced transportation infrastructure projects with progression to task and project management.

Professional Engineer (PE) certification and ability to obtain PE in multiple states.

Excellent communication skills.

Familiarity with construction methods and ability to optimize designs accordingly.

Familiarity with federal, state, and local permitting.

CA PE preferred.

Compensation Pay ranges vary by location; example ranges: New Jersey $193,811.25 – $337,739.58; Los Angeles Metro Area $202,620.86 – $323,667.10; San Diego, Sacramento and Inland Empire $193,811.25 – $309,594.62; Colorado $193,811.25 – $309,594.62.
