Department: Public Utilities Commission Job class: 1705-Communications Dispatcher II Pay range: $38.075/hr - $46.2875/hr Role type: Temporary Exempt Hours: Part-time The Communications Dispatcher II provides around-the-clock dispatch support to the department’s managers and supervisors, field crews, and operations personnel. This is an as-needed temporary appointment not to exceed 1040 hours in a fiscal year. Candidates may cover any full or partial shift on an as-needed basis and may be called on short notice for day, swing, or graveyard shifts.

Location: San Francisco Water Supply and Treatment Division, 1000 El Camino Real, Millbrae, CA 94030

Essential Duties

Operates a variety of communications equipment and information transmitting devices (multi-line telephones, keyboard, two-way radio, pager systems) to receive and transmit information; requests reports and emergency calls from mobile radio field units and telephones; transmits messages and routes calls to the proper bureau or detail for action.

Verifies and evaluates messages to determine accuracy and follow-up actions; ensures proper receipt and understanding to determine actions and notify appropriate staff and/or agencies.

Dispatches mobile units and equipment to specific work locations; makes requests for ambulance, tow-truck, or other emergency services; coordinates with other agencies as needed; reads maps and provides directions to emergency locations.

Records information in electronic systems, sends messages using computer-based messaging, and logs daily entries in the database; tracks entry and exit of watershed by permit holders.

Performs other duties as assigned.

How to qualify Minimum Qualifications Experience candidates should have one of the following:

Two years of verifiable experience operating a two-way radio communications base station, receiving, recording, and transmitting messages.

Combined total of two years of verifiable experience operating a multi-line telephone and a two-way radio communications base system, with at least one year operating a two-way radio base station.

Experience working as a communications dispatcher or operator

Knowledge in responding to emergency calls and ability to multitask and take immediate action

Strong communication skills

Knowledge of reading maps and conveying accurate information

Ability to evaluate information and make sound decisions

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Strong organizational and time management skills

Available to work with flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays (Day, Swing or Graveyard shift)
