About the Role We are currently seeking an Associate or Senior Editor with experience in Earth or environmental research to join Communications Earth & Environment (https://www.nature.com/commsenv/). The journal is a fast‑growing multidisciplinary open‑access platform for the Earth, planetary and environmental sciences. You will be responsible for selecting and preparing manuscripts for publication and promoting the journal’s coverage across all fields within Earth and environmental sciences.
Role Responsibilities
Selection of manuscripts for publication in the journal, with appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its editorial policy.
Make selected manuscripts accessible to a wide readership by refining titles, abstracts and introductory sections, and by suggesting structural changes to authors.
Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to production in a complete and proper state.
Recommend appropriate manuscripts to the Chief Editor for journal press releases and write press release drafts.
Help recruit, train, support and keep engaged a team of external editors, ensuring they understand and implement the journal’s philosophy and policies.
Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions (in agreement with the Chief Editor) and report on these activities.
Advise Advertising and Marketing as required, answering questions and offering suggestions or leads where possible.
Devise and supply editorial content for special projects as agreed with the Chief Editor.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
PhD level (or equivalent) research experience in Earth and environmental sciences; particularly welcomed expertise in palaeoclimate or oceanography.
Editorial experience, postdoctoral experience and broad training will be an advantage.
A passion for science and a desire to learn more, with demonstrated breadth of interest within and beyond one’s speciality.
The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different disciplines.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken).
A desire to meet scientists worldwide, online and in person, and to learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.
