Job Overview
The Graphic Design & Creative Operations Manager is responsible for leading the creative studio, hands-on design expertise, managing the delivery of high-quality design projects, and ensuring all creative outputs align with the firm’s brand standards, project goals, and business objectives. This role balances creative direction with operational oversight, combining strong design expertise, project management, and team leadership to support the firm’s communications, marketing, and business development efforts.
This role works closely with the Creative Director and the Chief Communications Officer and cross-functional teams in Communications, Marketing, Business Development, and Operations to deliver impactful creative work that supports firm priorities. Travel to Philadelphia and other key office locations will be required as business needs arise.
This role has a hybrid working arrangement. Potential candidates must live within commuting distance of our Washington, DC office to be onsite 3 days per week. Remote work arrangements may be considered. In this role, you will report to the Creative Director.
Essential Functions
Creative & Design: Deliver compelling, high-quality design solutions that meet project objectives, align with client briefs, and uphold firm brand standards across digital, print, and experiential media. Design and develop creative assets including advertisements, social media content, infographics, brochures, event materials, presentations, merchandise, and firm stationery. Maintain and evolve the firm’s visual identity, introducing new creative approaches, innovative design processes, and workflow efficiencies. Provide expertise and guidance to stakeholders on effective brand applications, design best practices, and storytelling. Provide design and creative direction support for firm events, conferences, sponsorships, and campaigns. Review and proof design outputs to ensure accuracy, brand alignment, and quality control before delivery. Stay current with emerging design technologies, including AI tools and trends, to enhance creative workflows, improve efficiency, and bring innovative solutions to the studio.
Process, Project Management & Administration: Assign projects, delegate responsibilities, and clearly communicate client and project needs to the design team. Lead project debriefs to celebrate successes, identify challenges, and implement improvements for future work. Keep stakeholders, clients, and team members informed of project status, proactively managing expectations and providing solutions when challenges arise. Maintain studio processes, policies, and best practices to improve workflow, communication, and production efficiency. Balance immediate project needs with long-term priorities through strong project management practices. Track and manage budgets for creative projects and studio operations, including developing estimates, financial tracking, cost controls, and approvals. Oversee administrative requirements, including timesheet completion, reporting, invoicing, and vendor contracts.
Studio & Operational Management: Oversee daily studio operations including workflow, scheduling, resourcing, and project prioritization to ensure timely and efficient delivery. Maintain and organize studio equipment, software, subscriptions, and digital asset libraries (DAM), ensuring proper archiving, file naming, and storage protocols. Manage external vendor relationships (printers, photographers, merchandise suppliers, etc.) and oversee procurement, production, and delivery of creative outputs. Provide constructive feedback to designers and external partners at every stage of the process. Manage and mentor design staff, freelancers by providing direction, feedback, and professional development opportunities. Lead, coach, and inspire a multidisciplinary creative team, fostering collaboration and a positive studio culture. Recruit and onboard design talent and freelancers as needed to support workload and project demands. Stay current on industry, design, and technology trends, applying new tools and approaches to enhance creative output. Encourage continuous professional development and upskilling within the team to maintain expertise and reduce outsourcing needs. Promote a supportive, team-oriented environment that values communication, empathy, and accountability. Perform other responsibilities as assigned. Work additional hours as needed to fulfill job requirements.
Skills/Qualifications
8+ years of graphic design experience in a law firm environment or professional services organization.
Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design, marketing, communications, or a related field.
In-depth knowledge of art, design, marketing and branding principles.
Experience with Content Management, Asset Management, digital and social marketing, web design.
Ability to think holistically with an ability to work through all stages of design from concept to final delivery.
Strong time and project management skills.
Ability to be flexible and multitask (intake and reroute projects).
Ability to independently create designs and make informed decisions that uphold our brand.
Solutions-oriented, and a continual learner.
Strong attention to detail and foundation in core design principles (ex. typography, color, layout and grid, hierarchy, animation, and accessibility).
Effective communication and presentation skills with both creatives and non-creatives.
Experience with online meeting platforms like Zoom, Webinar.com, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts.
Ability to work efficiently in a PC environment using Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Excellent eye for photography, graphic design, and other creative disciplines.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, Microsoft Applications, HTML, SharePoint, CSS, Canva, Vuture, video editing and email marketing software.
Promote positive work habits, including effective and timely communication, teamwork, and demonstrating respect for colleagues.
Contribute to providing the highest quality of service to internal and external clients.
Take appropriate initiative and ownership of job responsibilities while ensuring the assignments/job duties are performed successfully and on time.

Compensation
The salary range for this role is $100,000 - $120,000. Actual salaries will depend on a candidate's geographic location, relevant experience, and skillset. The salary range listed is just one component of Blank Rome’s total compensation package for employees. Other monetary rewards include annual discretionary bonuses based on performance and profit-sharing contributions based on eligibility and firm profitability.
