Position Overview
The Deputy Managing Editor (DME) guides the APM Reports team within MPR News. The unit is a national award‑winning, ambitious, enterprising group of investigative and documentary reporters, producers, and editors. The DME is responsible for the team’s complex and consequential original revelations across all channels. The role calls for an experienced investigative editor committed to creating essential, engaging journalism that serves the public interest. The DME will be an inspiring leader and mentor, uphold high standards of journalism excellence, and set the team’s vision in collaboration with the supervisor. Exceptional communication, expertise in investigative and data reporting, and partnership development are critical for success.
Responsibilities
- Manage team’s workflows to maintain a broad content stream and impactful stories used for all channels
- Ensure assigned teams meet daily and project deadlines
- Assist with determining news coverage priorities
- Participate in and help lead all applicable editorial meetings
- Assign stories and support MPR News coverage needs and processes
- Coordinate collaboration across channels, including digital team on production, images, video and graphics, and marketing
- Foster a knowledge‑sharing environment
- Work on special projects as assigned
- Champion, foster and develop the highest journalism standards of enterprise reporting
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
- 5 years of editing, enterprise, and/or supervisory journalism experience
- 10 years of journalism reporting or producing experience
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Proficient in news gathering, editing, and fact‑checking
- Experienced with AP Style and data journalism reporting
- Proven track record of editing original, complex investigative stories on tight deadlines
- History of producing sophisticated, high‑quality journalism on complex topics and story ideas
- Strong capacity for managing teams and multi‑stakeholder reporting
- Experience with legally sensitive or confidential information and discretion
- Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities
- Ability to work and lead efficiently, calmly, and cooperatively under deadline pressure
- Willingness to innovate, learn new skills, and create new ways to serve the audience on all channels
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with long‑format and/or podcasting production
- Ability to inspire, mentor, and build successful teams
- Strategic and digital thinker
- Innovative, constant learner ready to shape the future of enterprise and investigative journalism across channels
- Capable of delivering for all channels in breaking‑news situations
- Familiarity with CMS and audio production systems

Compensation
$110,000 – $130,000 USD annualized. Exact rate determined by experience, education, organizational structure, and internal equity.
