Job Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Library Assistant - Casual for Rutgers Libraries. The position supports the daily operations of Access Services at Dana Library, with a primary focus on circulation, patron assistance, and student worker support.
Responsibilities
- Ensure smooth front‑desk service and contribute to Resource Sharing and Course Reserves workflows.
- Welcome and assist users with both routine and complex information needs, fostering a positive and inclusive library experience.
- Deliver circulation services including processing checkouts, returns, holds, fines, and record updates for patrons and materials.
- Provide clear guidance to patrons on library policies and services, interpreting procedures for both users and part‑time staff.
- Resolve routine and non‑routine service issues with accuracy and tact; refer unresolved concerns to a supervisor when necessary.
- Teach patrons how to use My Account, renew items, request materials for pickup or digitization, access interlibrary loan services, and locate course reserve materials.
- Offer welcoming front‑line support by answering questions, directing users within the library, and assisting with general and specialized collections (e.g., Jazz, Newark Collection).
- Work effectively with MS Office applications and library systems (ALMA, discovery tools, ILS) to carry out the work of the Access Services unit.
- Monitor and guide student employees in their daily work, ensuring accuracy and consistency in circulation tasks and system use.
- Provide ongoing support, training, and mentorship to student staff, serving as a reliable resource and point of reference.
- Perform light clerical and operational tasks, including sorting mail, filing, responding to phone inquiries, and maintaining orderly collections through shelving and shifting.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher.
- Experience working in an academic library.
Shift Schedule
- Sunday 5:30‑10:00 p.m.
- Monday 7:00 p.m.‑12:00 a.m.
- Tuesday 7:00 p.m.‑12:00 a.m.
- Wednesday 7:00 p.m.‑12:00 a.m.
- Saturday 1:00‑5:30 p.m.
- Tuesday 8:00 a.m.‑1:00 p.m.
- Wednesday 8:00 a.m.‑1:00 p.m.
- Thursday 8:00 a.m.‑1:00 p.m.
