Library Staff Assistant (Children's) – PT (19.5 hours)

The City of Marlborough is seeking to fill the part time (19.5 hours) position of Library Staff Assistant in the Children’s Department at the Marlborough Public Library.

Bargaining Unit: MMEA

Step Rate: $15.9194-$17.9092

Location: 35 West Main St.

* Schedule includes regularly scheduled nights, Saturdays and Sundays

** Working on Sunday’s includes a $2.00/hour stipend, per the MMEA Union Contract

DEFINITION/PURPOSE

This position provides direct customer service for a vibrant, multi-cultural population in a busy city library. Under the direction of the Head of Children’s Services, provides support to the daily activities in the Children’s Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serves mainly at the Children’s Services desk and performs wide range of duties including but not limited to: register borrowers; charges/discharges print and non-print materials to patrons in accordance with library policies. Collects fees. Answers inquiries on the telephone and in person. Gives directional information.
  • Provides effective, and efficient customer service and promotes positive community relations.
  • Assists with variety of creative library programs designed to encourage participation of library patrons, including but not limited to, story time, craft programs and author visits.
  • Assists with creating book lists and book displays.
  • Resolves minor patron issues; refers more complex patron issues to supervisor.
  • Covers other departments as directed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patron records according to library policy and Mass General Law.
  • Assists with running reports, cataloging, or other detail-oriented tasks
  • Assists patrons in use of the catalog, placing holds, requesting museum passes and borrowing from the Library of Things.
  • Assists public with and serves as resource for patron technical/computer questions.
  • Sends materials to other libraries and assists in distributing holds and network transfers. May contribute to shelf reading and weeding.
  • Familiarity with Spanish, Portuguese desirable
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

College graduate preferred or any equivalent combination of work/educational experience. Experience working with children and/or customer service desirable.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of Children’s literature
  • Knowledge of library services and library technologies
  • Ability to problem solve, exhibit flexibility, initiative and diplomacy
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public in person, on the telephone and in writing.
  • Knowledgeable with computer software and hardware including brochure design, production software and mobile devices
  • Familiarity with Spanish, Portuguese desirable.

  • Work is performed mostly in a library setting; must be capable of operating computers and various pieces of office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.
  • The employee must have the ability to move around the facility, walking, sitting, bending, climbing, kneeling, carrying, and stooping.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Mental Requirements

  • Able to receive, understand, interpret and carry out library policies and procedures.
  • Ongoing intellectual effort is required to maintain a current knowledge of library resources,
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate questions, ideas and information.
  • Time management skills sufficient to set priorities in order to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to recognize and maintain confidential data
