Overview
Director of Technical Design
Our client, a leading high-end womenswear brand based in New York City, is seeking a Director of Technical Design to join their team. This role will report directly to the VP of Production.
Responsibilities
- Manage workflow and a team of three direct reports in Technical Design to meet calendar milestones for both development and production.
- Collaborate with Design to obtain clear direction on design intent, fit direction, and garment construction for seasonal development.
- Oversee development of new seasonal styles, aligning creative design vision and merchandising information through to final production approvals.
- Establish and maintain fit and construction standards to achieve desired aesthetics while improving comfort and functionality.
- Supervise and conduct live model fittings to ensure garments reflect the original design concept and can be efficiently produced within schedule and cost parameters.
- Review, analyze, and correct factory patterns daily with the team.
- Create and approve fit block patterns for core products.
- Communicate daily with overseas agents; travel internationally to collaborate directly with agents and factories, fostering strong professional relationships.
- Approve and sign off on third-party inspections.
- Review and approve fit model invoices.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Technical Design, including at least 5 years in a management role.
- Proven ability to lead, supervise, and provide clear goals for direct reports while fostering collaboration and a positive work environment.
- Strong patternmaking, draping, and construction expertise across all garment categories.
- Proficiency in garment grading across all product types.
- In-depth understanding of production methods and processes.
- Knowledge of fabric and yarn construction, finishes, and techniques.
- Familiarity with garment and fabric testing standards.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) as well as Gerber, PLM, Web PDM or equivalent systems, and Adobe Illustrator.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to inclusion and respect.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Exceptional time management, prioritization, and multitasking abilities.
- Highly organized with keen attention to detail and deadline sensitivity.
- Forward-thinking mindset with an awareness of market and fashion trends to identify and suggest new opportunities.
Compensation
Salary: $140,000 - $160,000
