Overview

The Director of Communication is a forward thinking servant within the church and school. This person will lead and oversee the unified communication strategy for both our LCMS church and school ministry. They will work in conjunction with other members of the staff and lay leadership to further our mission: “Crown of Life is engaging generations to live in God’s truth and to live out His grace.”

Working closely with pastoral staff, ministry leaders, and lay teams, the Director of Communications ensures that all messaging—whether digital, print, or verbal—is Christ-centered, welcoming, and aligned with the theological and cultural identity of Crown of Life. This is a collaborative, ministry-minded position reporting to the Church Administrator.

Primary Job Responsibilities

COMMUNICATION CALENDAR DEVELOPMENT AND ALIGNMENT

  • Develop and manage an integrated, year-round communication calendar that reflects the rhythms of both church and school life.
  • Work closely with ministry leaders and staff to gather timely information, promote events, and align messaging across platforms.
  • Develop communication workflows that support consistency and clarity in both internal and external communications.
  • Oversee promotional videos, bulletin production, announcement slides, email campaigns, and other regular church and school publications.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Develop and implement a dynamic social media strategy to connect with church members, school families, and the surrounding community.
  • Create or curate original content (images, video, stories, devotionals, etc.) that reflects the heart of our Gospel mission and LCMS identity.
  • Monitor analytics and audience engagement to refine messaging and grow reach across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and others.
  • Train and empower staff and volunteers to contribute meaningfully to digital outreach efforts.

WEBSITE AND DIGITAL PRESENCE

  • Maintain, update, and optimize both the church and school websites to ensure they are current, inviting to newcomers, and accessible on all devices.
  • Coordinate regular content updates (events, sermons, enrollment info, forms, blog posts, etc.).
  • Collaborate with pastoral and ministry teams to ensure theological accuracy and clarity in public-facing digital content.
  • Use tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, CapCut, (or other design platforms as applicable) to create graphics and visual assets that support ministry goals.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure all communication honors and upholds the doctrinal commitments of the LCMS.
  • Participate in strategic planning and goal setting with ministry leaders.
  • Assist in preparing and managing the Communication budget.
  • Attend and actively participate in major church-wide events and worship services.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative staff culture through regular participation in staff meetings, devotions, retreats, and team-building activities.
  • Stay current with trends and best practices in social media trends for ministries through continued education, reading, and networking.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Committed to a personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Attending and serving member at a Christian Church, preferably within the LCMS.
  • Experience in content creation, marketing, or communications.
  • Working knowledge of design and content tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, video editing platforms, CMS platforms, and email marketing tools.
  • Believe in a collaborative team approach to ministry, communicating effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to start new programs at the discretion of COL senior leadership.
  • Skilled at performing and completing tasks in a group or independently.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage workload and time efficiently.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Digital Media, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of professional experience in a communications, digital marketing, or media role—preferably within a church, school, nonprofit, or ministry context.
  • Able to analyze data and insights to inform decisions and report outcomes.
  • Experience managing or mentoring volunteers in communication or digital roles.
  • Comfortable supporting leadership teams and representing the voice of the church and school with professionalism and theological alignment.
