Communication Tenure-Track Faculty

Position: full-time, 175‑day tenure‑track appointment based in Champaign, Illinois, covered by the Parkland Academic Employees (PAE) collective bargaining unit. Starting salary for 12 months ranges from $48,200.96 to $73,004.53, dependent on certifications, teaching experience, and education.

Tenure‑Track Faculty teach a full‑time load following the PAE agreement. They advise and mentor students, and participate in governance of their departments and the college. Instructional areas include general‑education communication courses covering theory and application such as public speaking, and at least one additional expertise area such as media or mass communication, advertising/public relations, interpersonal communication or news and broadcast writing.

Essential Job Functions

  • Teach courses in multiple modalities— in person, hybrid, and online.
  • Participate in college, departmental, community, and program activities and collaborate with colleagues across disciplines.
  • Commit to assessment, growth, and success of the communication program.
  • Perform professional duties in accordance with college policies and procedures.
  • Provide classroom instruction aligned with the college’s philosophy, objectives, and course outlines.
  • Inform students of regulations, evaluation procedures, and provide a syllabus early each term.
  • Be available for student advising and mentoring.
  • Maintain office hours to ensure student consultation availability.
  • Maintain accurate scholastic records and submit required reports on student progress by deadlines.
  • Participate in college‑wide governance, including PCA Senate, committees, administrative committees, and accreditation committees.
  • Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Communication, Communication Studies, Media or Mass Communication, or a related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours of communication coursework.
  • At least two (2) years of previous college teaching experience and a demonstrated ability and strong commitment to teaching and learning at a comprehensive community college.
  • Experience with technology that supports teaching communication in both the classroom and online.
  • Ability to learn the Parkland information system and new programs as technology changes.
  • Successful completion of a post‑offer, pre‑employment criminal background check with fingerprinting, including exclusionary offenses per Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Candidates must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend their SURS annuity upon employment (excluding those with Self‑Managed Plan or lump‑sum).
