About the Role:
As a Visual Instruction Developer Level 3 at Newport News Shipbuilding, you will serve as a technical expert in developing advanced visual work instructions and manufacturing documentation that guide ship construction and integration activities. You’ll collaborate across engineering, planning, and production teams to translate complex technical data into clear, accurate, and visually engaging content. Your experience will help drive standardization, quality, and innovation in how visual instructions are developed and implemented across programs.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of high-quality 2D and 3D visual work instructions for shipbuilding and manufacturing processes.
- Interpret complex engineering drawings, 3D models, and specifications to create accurate, step-by-step visual documentation.
- Collaborate with engineering, planning, and trade experts to validate content and ensure compliance with design and production requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by refining visualization processes, templates, and digital standards.
- Serve as a mentor and technical lead for junior developers, providing training and quality reviews.
- Manage multiple projects, ensuring timely delivery of accurate visual documentation to support production schedules.
- Utilize advanced visualization and authoring tools (NX, Teamcenter, Creo, or similar).
- Analyze digital design data and utilize these products in conjunction with build plans to create quality and accurate Visual Work Instructions (VWIs). Interpret and add design elements and portions of systems for VWIs to meet manufacturing and installation requirements. Utilize computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as Teamcenter, NX, SAP, NGP and TDP. Incorporate required changes as applicable. Advise management of work status, material availability, and potential production problems to ensure that personnel, equipment, materials and services are provided as needed. Assess project issues and develop resolutions to meet productivity, quality, and client-satisfaction goals and objectives.
Must Have
Associate's Degree in relevant field and 3 Years of relevant experience
- High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
- High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
Nice to Have
- Experience in shipbuilding, aerospace, or other heavy industrial manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead process improvements or documentation projects.
- Knowledge of model-based definition (MBD) and digital manufacturing systems.
- Strong project management and mentoring abilities.
