Hiring Rate: $30.24 hourly during basic training. Lateral Hiring Range: $30.24 - $38.23 hourly, during basic training. Lateral candidates are highly encouraged and welcome! Full Pay Range of the Emergency Communications Specialist Series: $27.80 - $50.67 hourly based on progression through additional certifications and achievements. Career Advancement After Basic Training, team members have access to additional certifications and responsibilities: Emergency Communications Specialist I (9‑1‑1 and non‑emergency call taking): 6% increase upon completion of basic training Emergency Communications Specialist II (9‑1‑1, services/data, police or fire dispatching): 7% increase from ECS‑I, upon completion of advancement training Emergency Communications Specialist III (9‑1‑1, services/data, police and fire dispatching): 7% increase from ECS‑II, upon completion of advancement training; +4% longevity recognition after five years as an ECS‑III Qualified team members may become certified as a Communications Training Officer (CTO) and will earn an additional 5% salary per training hour while certified. Bilingual team members may also qualify for additional compensation. Aurora911 is staffed by public safety professionals who are trained to answer and triage 9‑1‑1 and non‑emergency telephone calls, dispatch police, fire, paramedic, and alternative response resources. The team works with the Aurora Police Department, Aurora Fire Rescue, Falck ambulance, Aurora Mobile Response Team, Information Technology, and other city departments to ensure safety and quality of life. The Emergency Communications Specialist I (ECS‑1) position is the entry‑level 9‑1‑1 operational position in the Aurora911 Communications Center. Primary Duties & Responsibilities (ECS‑1) Receive and prioritize emergency and non‑emergency calls and digital requests for emergency assistance. Administer care by providing pre‑arrival medical instruction or directing callers through lifesaving procedures. Operate public safety communications equipment. Initiate public safety response requests into the computer‑aided dispatch system. Provide emergency aid and information to non‑emergency callers; transfer calls as appropriate. Read and interpret maps for location assistance. Perform various computer checks and enter records. Enter automated records and maintain logs. Provide backup to dispatchers when needed. If eligible, review policy and procedures with trainees; document training activity. Support police dispatchers via the “Services” channel. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions Age: 18 years of age or older at the time of employment. Education: High School Diploma or GED; Successful completion of Aurora911 Basic Training Program, including all relevant certifications (CCIC/NCIC, EMD, EFD, CPR). Experience: Successful completion of basic training and introductory period with the Department, maintaining a successful performance rating. Licenses and Certifications: Required through training throughout employment, including NCIC/CCIC, NIMS 100, 200, 700, CPR, First Aid, Crisis Intervention, MPDS, FPDS, PPDS, and CTO certification for trainers. Knowledge: Operations of the Emergency Communications Center; public safety telecommunications technology; questioning techniques; diversity awareness; de‑escalation; customer service principles; record keeping; geographic features; English usage; office technology; federal, state, and local laws. Abilities: Promote a positive workplace environment; work independently; prioritize tasks; maintain confidentiality; professional communication; emotional self‑regulation; handle complex inquiries; establish emergency priorities; multitask; protect confidential information; adapt to changes; work non‑traditional schedules; operate telecommunications equipment; interpret maps; maintain accurate records; exercise good judgment; apply policies. Essential Personnel: Interaction with people in crisis; handle mandatory overtime; periodic paid breaks. Physical Demands: Light physical activity up to 10 lbs; occasional lifting, walking, standing, sitting; use of headset and radio; hand/eye coordination; clear speech and hearing; vision to read reports. Work Environment: Clean, comfortable environment with varying noise levels. Equipment Used: Computer and other standard office equipment including monitors.
