Paid hourly + commission (based on performance) About The Daily Californian The Daily Californian is UC Berkeley’s independent, student-run news outlet, serving the campus and the surrounding Berkeley community since 1871. The Daily Cal provides award-winning coverage of higher education, Bay Area news and student perspectives, while giving staff members hands-on experience in journalism and media management. Position Overview The Marketing & Sales Associate will help grow The Daily Californian’s advertising revenue and strengthen its campus and community presence. This role combines client-facing sales work with creative marketing outreach. You’ll cultivate relationships with local businesses, campus organizations, and regional advertisers, while contributing ideas to marketing campaigns that expand readership and engagement. This position is ideal for someone interested in media, marketing, and entrepreneurship who wants real-world experience managing accounts and driving results. Key Responsibilities
Identify, contact and develop relationships with potential advertisers — including local businesses, campus departments, and event organizers. Manage existing advertising accounts, ensuring ad placement and delivery meet client expectations. Create and present advertising proposals and custom packages across The Daily Cal’s platforms (print, digital, social media, newsletters, and special issues). Track sales performance, invoices, and client communications using internal CRM systems. Work closely with design and production staff to coordinate artwork and ad deadlines. Develop and execute marketing initiatives that promote The Daily Cal’s readership and brand visibility on campus and in the community. Assist in managing The Daily Cal’s social media and promotional campaigns related to advertising and audience engagement. Help plan and support campus tabling events, sponsorships, and collaborations with student organizations or Berkeley businesses. Contribute creative ideas for branded content, cross-platform promotions, or partnership campaigns. Qualifications
Strong communication and interpersonal skills — comfortable with outreach, pitching and client follow-up. Organized, reliable, and able to balance multiple projects and deadlines. A collaborative team player with initiative and problem-solving skills. Prior experience in marketing, sales, communications, or customer service is a plus, but not required. Familiarity with Canva, Google Workspace, or social media analytics tools is helpful. Benefits & Experience
