Position Summary
The Technical/Material Artist will be responsible for creating high‑quality shaders and materials for characters and environments as well as textures for our title. This is a hybrid position and the candidate must be willing to work in California.
Responsibilities
- Create texture and material and apply to character, asset, props, and other 3D models in the required aesthetic style.
- Provide technical solutions to achieve the required aesthetic look while meeting optimization requests, adjusting textures and shaders to achieve the correct effect.
- Follow the given Art Direction and work with Level Designers to ensure that environments are visually compelling and support gameplay.
- Create and maintain master materials, material instances, and internal tools or scripts to improve efficiency and consistency in the material pipeline.
- Work proficiently with tools such as Maya, Substance Painter/Designer, and Unreal Engine for material creation, shader setup, and integration.
- Use a PBR workflow and master material setups to achieve consistent, high‑quality results.
3D Modeling and Look Development
- Support the development of the look of 3D models, including textures and materials such as fur and hair based on concept art or specifications.
- Provide feedback on textures and shaders created by internal and external artists to fully develop the desired look in the game engine.
Other Game Development Tasks
- Work with developers of other disciplines to ensure that scenes and art assets support overall game performance and memory budget.
- Help with game design or testing when necessary.
- Research and share information about the latest best practices or tools for efficient 3D art creation.
Other & Miscellaneous
- Perform special projects and other miscellaneous duties assigned by upper management.
- Test prototypes of future game titles to provide constructive feedback.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Requirements and Skills
- 3+ years of professional experience as a Technical or Material Artist, or in a similar position.
- Intensive experience working with game engines.
- Experience with Unreal Engine is required.
- Strong foundation in art and design, including composition, form, and color theory.
- Understanding of architecture and city planning.
- Fluent in Photoshop, Substance Suite and ability to paint textures.
- Basic knowledge of 3D modeling using Maya, ZBrush, or similar software.
- Knowledge of managing art assets for games in a clean organization.
- Good communication skills and a proactive attitude toward sharing information and assets.
- Team‑player attitude, flexibility with new ideas, and willingness to listen to teammates.
- Self‑motivated, able to maintain vision for a level until completion and meet deadlines.
Pluses
- Experience with Unreal PCG framework.
- Experience teaching Art, especially Environment Art, online or in person.
- Art Leadership experience.
- Houdini experience.

$60,000 – $100,000 per year
