The News Star in Monroe, Louisiana, part of the USA TODAY Network, is hiring a Sports Reporter to cover athletics at two dozen northeast Louisiana high schools and NCAA Division I universities in the area.
Monroe is a vibrant community with a strong sports culture, home to Louisiana‑Monroe, Grambling State, and Louisiana Tech. It offers a dynamic environment for a reporter to build relationships and deliver timely, human‑interest stories.
Responsibilities
- Create storylines that inform, entertain, and engage specific audiences across multiple platforms, using metrics for guidance.
- Become the community’s leading voice of expertise in college sports.
- Connect with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on‑camera presence, forums, community leadership, etc.) and provide thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
- Collaborate with editor and content strategist to evaluate what works and develop ongoing plans to satisfy audience needs.
- Work with production teams to provide appropriate elements (photos, videos, graphics). Capture basic photos and video as needed.
- Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues, and the institutional brand.
- Deliver outstanding customer service by helping readers find answers and solutions.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous reporting experience—preferably in sports.
- Proficiency on social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit.
- Experience shooting and editing photos and videos on a mobile device.
- Strong communication skills, news judgment, and headline‑writing ability.
- Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure.
- Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently.
- Strong writing, spelling, and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
- Availability for nights and weekends.
- Comfort building a beat and communicating with athletes and coaches.
