The User Experience Research Advisor is part of Macy’s Inc.\'s User Experience organization which shapes user experience design for all digital properties on Macy’s.com. This role gathers user insights to inform engaging user experiences and has a proven track record of conducting world-class user research studies in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The candidate will obtain research findings that address business goals and user needs, work effectively in a cross-functional context, and advocate for research and data to inform design. Reports to the Director of User Experience Research.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and conduct user research across channels and domains.
  • Support and learn a human-centered design process to create high-quality user experiences.
  • Design and conduct qualitative studies, including field observations, interviews, and usability studies for current and future products.
  • Design and conduct quantitative studies, such as surveys, to evaluate the impact of product changes and gather insights at scale.
  • Collaborate with executives, managers, teams, designers, and stakeholders to identify user research opportunities.
  • Partner with other customer data teams to coordinate user research efforts.
  • Help define user success metrics for assigned channels and domains.
  • Develop quick, generative, and evaluative studies, including guerilla usability testing.
  • Invent and adapt research practices to deliver insights that keep teams customer-focused.
  • Synthesize qualitative and quantitative data to understand customers, provide business value, and identify risks.
  • Present, communicate, and influence to bring the voice of the customer to life.
  • Help teams understand customer needs, pain points, attitudes, and behaviors through actionable research.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on customers\' behaviors for assigned channels and domains.
  • Mentor UX Designers on user research best practices.

Skills You Will Need

  • Strong user research skills: Experience with qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
  • Knowledgeable in implementing a variety of research methods: Ethnography, contextual inquiry, interviews, guerilla research, surveys, usability testing, A/B testing, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills: Ability to communicate with all levels of leaders and stakeholders.
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Time management and prioritization: Manage multiple projects at various stages.
  • Strong research portfolio: Demonstrates use of diverse methods to drive decision-making.
  • Ability to share technical information: Communicate technical issues to all levels.
  • Multi-project management

  • Creative, strategic, and technical thinking
  • Knowledge of MS Office

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 2+ years of user research experience across mobile apps, websites, or retail stores.
  • Regularly able to sit, talk, hear, use hands, and move as needed; requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department needs; role is based in New York City with two days per week in office.
