Associate Director – Media Relations & Issues Management

About the Department The Communications Department brings the value of Novo Nordisk medicines and innovations to life through strategic communications that elevate our purpose, drive our business, foster our culture and enhance our reputation with patients, customers, employees and society. Communications is comprised of four teams: Corporate Reputation & Brand; Commercial Communications; Enterprise & Leadership Communications; and Digital Channels & Content.
Essential Functions
Media Relations:
Serves as a spokesperson for the company; establishes and maintains contact with key media targets at national and local levels. Anticipates and responds to media inquiries.
Develops and drives proactive media relations programs to generate positive coverage across business, healthcare, financial and consumer press.
Creates strategy to leverage new media to build awareness and shape stakeholder perceptions.
Directs development of media strategies and key message platforms, prepares and coaches senior management for media interviews.
Leads communications excellence activities, including media training and crisis readiness.
Ensures alignment between US and global teams and provides updates on key issues and crises.
Partners across the USO Communications Department to drive integrated planning and consistent narrative across media, issues and crisis communications.
Measurement:
Contributes to developing integrated metrics that demonstrate the value of media and issues communications.
Issues Management:
Conducts assessment of potential issues, devises plans to anticipate and mitigate them, and counsels senior leaders on strategy and responses.
Serves as the Media Relations lead for USO Crisis Response Teams as required.
Team Management:
Helps manage communications budgets and agency spend, ensuring programs stay within budget.
Physical Requirements 10-20% overnight travel required.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Minimum of 12 years of progressive communications or related experience.
Experience in a public relations agency environment and/or the pharmaceutical industry preferred.
Proven strategic planning, media relations and issues/crisis management skills.
Demonstrated success in creating strategic direction and driving business improvement.
Ability to work under tight timelines in a stressful environment.
Strong business acumen and influence across all levels.
Proven project management and stakeholder influence skills.
Adaptability to cross‑functional and global considerations.
Proven understanding of integrated media, social and digital platforms.
The base compensation range for this position is $175,000 to $235,000. Base compensation is determined based on a number of factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance.
Novo Nordisk offers long‑term incentive compensation and/or company vehicles depending on the position level, as well as benefits including medical, dental and vision coverage; life insurance; disability insurance; 401(k) savings plan; flexible spending accounts; employee assistance program; tuition reimbursement; and voluntary benefits such as group legal, critical illness, identity theft protection, pet insurance, and auto/home insurance.
