Department The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is a vital agency in the Executive Branch of Utah State Government dedicated to "Keeping Utah Safe".
Responsibilities
Direct high‑level communication strategies to inform, influence, and engage stakeholders including the Governor's Office, other state agencies, the Legislature, and the general public.
Develop and lead rapid, effective crisis communication plans during critical incidents and emergencies to protect DPS’s reputation and provide timely, accurate public information.
Drive brand and communication standards of DPS, ensuring all internal and external messaging, digital assets, and publications reflect the Department's mission, vision, and values.
Serve as DPS’s chief media representative, supervising Public Information Officers, preparing public statements, and coordinating with media outlets.
Develop, implement, and maintain an internal communication strategy for over 1,600 state employees.
Oversee social media and online content strategy, manage digital assets, and direct graphic design production for publications and displays.
Provide expert consultation on media strategy to senior leadership and department heads.
Ensure compliance with the Utah Government Records Access Management Act (GRAMA).
Ideal Candidate
Significant leadership and supervisory experience in communications within a law enforcement or public safety agency.
Experience as a spokesperson, Public Information Officer, or Communications/Public Affairs Director.
