Position Summary
The Department of Art & Art History seeks an Art and Art History Studio Technician to support students and faculty in studio spaces and equipment. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and organized studio environment, ensuring proper use of equipment and materials, supervising students, managing inventories and budgets with departmental approval, and developing safety and equipment training programs. The role may involve occasional teaching or co‑teaching responsibilities if needed.
Required Education / Experience / Skills
• Master’s in Fine Arts degree (or equivalent Bachelor’s degree with significant experience).
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. to waist height.
• Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Education / Experience / Skills
• MFA with experience in high‑pace academic studios, especially Ceramics and Sculpture.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Experience managing high‑energy academic studios.
- Extensive experience loading and firing kilns (wood, electric, gas).
- Knowledge of Anagama firing aspects (sourcing wood, organizing shifts, training students).
- Maintenance of kiln bricks (cutting, cleaning, grinding).
- Repair and maintenance of electric/gas kilns, electric wheels, clay mixers, slab rollers, spray booths, and extruders.
- Experience with woodworking equipment/processes (table saw, band saw, jointer, miter saw, planer, drill press, sanders).
- Experience with metal fabrication equipment/processes (shear, brake, roller, hydraulic press, media blaster, drill press, grinders, sanders).
- Proficiency with MIG, TIG, and oxy‑acetylene equipment and processes.
- Experience with forge and foundry equipment.
- Experience with mold‑making, slip‑casting, lost‑wax, and other casting processes.
- Familiarity with non‑traditional sculptural materials/processes.
- Managing inventories of consumables, materials, and supplies in studio and gallery settings.
- Experience hanging and installing artwork in gallery settings and training students.
- Enforcement of all safety regulations.
- Familiarity with CNC technology, including 3D printers.
