Job Summary
The Audio Visual Specialist will work as a member of the Beckman ITS team. This position builds relationships with and provides direct hands‑on assistance to Beckman Institute facility users to enhance the presentation, collaboration, and interconnectedness of Beckman’s mission. The incumbent will incorporate industry‑leading technology best practices in conference rooms and auditorium, along with support customer service to Beckman personnel.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with the technical setup and support of events, including audio‑visual setup, technical support during events, and post‑event evaluation and troubleshooting. Many times, acting as a liaison between research staff and other staff or contract members to assure accurate problem interpretation.
- Partner with the Beckman Institute Information Technology Services Help Desk by setting and managing the expectations of customers; acting as an advocate for clients in service planning and deployment across the organization; and resolving customer satisfaction issues. Candidates must possess strong customer service skills and a strong interest in learning more about IT including providing first‑level contact and problem resolution for all customers with hardware, software, and printing issues. Resolve as many user problems as skills permit then properly advance other problems to appropriate Help Desk team members.
- Research, design, install, configure, and maintain audio‑visual systems including video conferencing equipment, projectors, displays, microphones, speakers, and related peripherals. Will be the IT staff member involved with communicating to research staff, administrative staff, or contract members to assure accurate problem interpretation or room upgrades.
- Manage audio‑visual infrastructure projects, from planning through implementation, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and timelines. Evaluate new technologies that would improve customer communication methods for research or conference rooms in the Beckman Institute.
- Conduct one‑on‑one training events and small group technology training orientations for users of the various spaces users reserve within the Beckman Institute.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including may supervise student staff or act as team leader on designated projects. Monitor the progress and direction of assigned tasks and make corrections as needed.
Additional Physical Demands
Work may require frequent bending or stooping to look inside the lectern and show people where to find various pieces of equipment. Kneeling is occasionally required to run cables and other equipment through the floors or reach inside the lectern to retrieve something that fell behind. This position also requires frequent communication both in‑person and via radio.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent. Any one or any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories: college coursework in Information Technology, IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline; or work experience in IT‑related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience with troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated experience working in a customer service environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of experience in audiovisual technologies, technology training, auditorium/conference room design, or the support of an organization’s technology‑enhanced conference room environment.
- Experience in face‑to‑face training, technology assessment, application of technology and media in auditorium/conference room and/or online environments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the systems and operations used within the areas and departments of responsibility.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Oversee and coordinate activities of user groups.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, supervisors, administrative staff, and other IT users.
- Identify and resolve technical problems.
- Effectively communicate and professionally interact with all staff levels.
Appointment Information
This is a 100 % full‑time Civil Service 5031 – Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12‑month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after December 15, 2025. The salary range for this position is $45,000–$60,000 per year. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.
