Overview

Under the general direction of branch management, performs a variety of services in support of patron service. Specific duties will vary depending on location.

Responsibilities

  • Serve the public by checking in/out library materials, collecting money for lost/damaged items, issuing new/replacement cards, registering new patrons, and processing name/address changes.
  • Maintain collection: sort and shelve materials; empty book drop(s); shelf‑read; shift materials; clean, dust, and inspect for damage; discard and repair materials.
  • Ensure circulation policies and procedures are followed and customer/material records are accurately entered into the library database.
  • Sort, pack, unpack, and inspect materials received from or shipped to other libraries.
  • Run reports and lists for item hold information and inter‑library loan requests; provide lists to others; route items appropriately; contact patrons or libraries as needed.
  • Provide reference and information services; receive and answer questions regarding collections, services, and policies; interpret patron needs.
  • Assist patrons in locating and requesting library materials; conduct reference interview services using ILS, print sources, KDL databases, and online tools.
  • Facilitate access to KDL's digital collection by demonstrating and assisting with e‑reader devices and applications.
  • Deliver directional information; refer advanced reference requests to Branch Librarians.
  • Provide information about circulation policies, procedures, and issue resolution.
  • Count, balance, and record monies received through the point of sale; forward reconciled funds and paperwork to Finance.
  • Assist patrons and staff with library equipment and machines (e.g., copier, printer, online catalog, word processing). Perform routine maintenance and correct minor malfunctions (refill paper, toner, clear jams).
  • Perform other clerical tasks upon request, including materials order entry, supply ordering, word processing, filing, checking in new periodicals, etc.
  • Sort and distribute U.S. and inter‑office mail.
  • Provide training and guidance to less experienced staff and may serve as a team leader on group assignments.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Physical Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous library or retail experience preferred.
  • Basic clerical skills: computer and telephone proficiency.
  • Knowledge of popular culture and various library genres.
  • Basic mathematical skills for routine calculations.
  • Working knowledge of KDL policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with general supervision and adhere to established policies.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with staff and customers politely.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Leadership and guidance skills for less experienced circulation staff.
  • Visual acuity for retrieving materials from shelves or storage areas.
  • Physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts, retrieve/place materials above shoulder or below knee level, and lift/carry bags up to 40 lb.
  • Hearing ability to answer telephone and customer inquiries.
  • Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and keyboarding/PC skills for accessing information.
  • Ability to operate computer, cash register, fax, copier.
  • Ability to travel between work locations and related places of business as needed.
  • Generally work in a normal office environment with minimal discomfort from temperature, dust, or noise.
  • Requires occasional travel between KDL locations; may include out‑of‑county travel for meetings and conferences.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Monday: 11:45‑8:15
  • Tuesday: 8:30‑5:00 (9:00‑12:30 when working weekend)
  • Friday: 8:30‑5:00 / 9:45‑6:15 (Off when working weekend)
  • Every Fourth Weekend: Saturday 8:45‑5:15, Sunday 12:45‑5:15
  • Frequent sitting/standing in one position for extended periods.
