Description
Part‑time Library Assistant assisting with circulation desk procedures and materials processing, and providing patron assistance as needed.
Schedule
Part time, about 25 hours per week. Options include:
- Fridays 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Saturdays 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
 - Monday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm, Wednesday 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday 9:00 am – 6:00 pm.
 - Flexibility and subject to change with one night and every other Saturday required.
 
Essential Functions
- Perform customer service functions, greet visitors, direct to library areas, provide assistance on library services, fees, policies, procedures, and general information.
 - Assist patrons with use of Alabama Virtual Library, PAC search stations, Internet computers, copy machines.
 - Locate and research library materials, issue library cards, update patron records, check in/out books and audio‑visual items, retrieve materials from book drop, process returns, shelve materials.
 - Check library materials in and out, check items for damage, empty book drops, issue applications and library cards, maintain patron records, receive and process books on hold.
 - Answer telephone, provide information, take/relay messages, contact patrons by phone or mail concerning holds or overdue materials.
 - Receive and record payments for overdue book fines, donations, and memorials.
 - Return library books/materials to appropriate shelving areas, shelve/ place materials in order, read labels, search for lost/missing materials, search online catalog to locate materials.
 - Operate personal computer, scanner, general office equipment; maintain basic computer and office equipment upkeep.
 - Perform other related duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Basic arithmetic operations.
 - Computer data entry systems and word processing applications.
 - Operate and monitor equipment and machinery.
 - Compile, assemble, copy, record and transcribe data.
 - Provide guidance and interpretation regarding procedures.
 - Utilize variety of reference data and information.
 - Follow written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
 - Exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity when evaluating information.
 
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
 - College level coursework or vocational training in personal computer operations.
 - Five months of experience or training involving library operations, Dewey Decimal classification, customer service, and personal computer operations.
 
Licenses or Certifications
- Valid State of Alabama driver’s license.
 
Additional Information
- Must be at least 18 years of age to work for the city and at least 20 years of age to operate City vehicles.
 - Physical demands: light work up to 20 lbs, moderate effort, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting moderate weight.
 - Work environment: office environment, no adverse conditions.
