Job Summary

The Music Teacher is responsible for the instruction of students in the fundamental principles of music and musicianship skills, such as music theory, notation, and appreciation in Choral and Instrumental performance. In addition to instruction, this teacher also prepares and directs school ensembles for public performance, develops liturgical programs, and collaborates with other teachers on events. The Music Teacher will also recognize musical talent in their students and encourage them to undertake further musical opportunities, such as participation in clinics and auditioning for advanced groups such as All-State Band and Choir.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony and instrumental/choral music, with a deference to Catholic heritage.
  • Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within allotted time. Utilize repertoire appropriate for ages and skill levels.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and adapt the curriculum to student needs.
  • Control storage and use of school-owned property; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments.
  • Coordinate with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions and civic functions.
  • Supervise students in extracurricular activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Love of working with youth, aligning with mission, vision, values.
  • Classroom management skills.
  • Knowledge of music theory and appreciation of music art part of general culture.
  • Proficiency in email, calendar, office software; music software skills appreciated.
  • Interpersonal, written/verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Public speaking and presentation skills.

Credentials and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music Education.
  • Teacher Certification with the State of Nebraska (or ability to reciprocate with another State).
  • Participation in professional Music Educators Associations preferred.
  • Valid driver's license to attend meetings and conferences.
