Duties & Responsibilities

Enterprise Marketing and Communications is seeking to hire an hourly staff member to fill the part‑time writer position. The part‑time writer will research and produce stories and press releases about the university and its health system in a general assignment role. A member of the VCU Public Relations department, the writer will collaborate with colleagues to manage assignments on a wide variety of topics crossing the university and health system campuses. The writer will conduct accurate reporting, write clear, compelling stories, and meet deadlines. Stories will adhere to AP style and VCU editorial guidelines.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proven oral and written communication skills, especially strong writing skills
  • Sound customer service skills; strong computer skills
  • Ability to communicate and present ideas accurately and clearly
  • Proficient knowledge of AP Style
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to work with details and deadlines
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Experience writing for publication
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • General knowledge of photography and videography
  • Some experience working in a university setting
  • Experience writing about health and science topics

Salary Range: $20 an hour

FLSA Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
