Library Page, Teen Reading Ambassadors - Seward Park Library
The New York Public Library is looking for teens in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who are enthusiastic about working with children, exploring a career in education or librarianship, and discovering the world of libraries. This role offers a chance to serve as a literacy tutor and to support the production of the Portal literary magazine for younger readers.

Compensation
$16.50 per hour
Program Schedule
The position runs from September 16, 2025 to June 18, 2026. Students will receive up to 12 hours of onboarding training followed by up to 33 weeks of work at a designated library branch (starting the week of October 6). Typical weekly hours are 6–7 hours, scheduled in two 3–3.5‑hour sessions on either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday after school. Additional orientation, training, and special event hours may be scheduled. Most hours begin around 3 PM; a few weekend events may occur. Students will not work during NYC school breaks or holidays.
Key Responsibilities
Support set‑up and clean‑up of after‑school programs
Assist students with homework and academic questions
Serve as a literacy tutor for children ages 6–12
Develop and lead literacy‑focused enrichment activities
Participate in trainings and meetings to improve tutoring practices
Support programs conducted by the Children’s Librarian and other key staff
Model exemplary behavior and serve as a role model for elementary school children
Collaborate with the Lead Tutor, other Tutors, and co‑ambassadors to create a fun, enriching environment
Optionally support the production of the Teen Reading Ambassadors’ literary magazine, Portal
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Education & Experience
Currently enrolled in 10th–12th grade at an NYC high school
Valid employment certificate for minors under 18 as required by NYS law
Resume submitted with application (resume writing guide available)
Skills
Demonstrated interest in and/or experience working with children
Enthusiasm for reading, writing, and libraries
Strong communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse group of people
Reliable, punctual, and team‑oriented
Adaptable and willing to be flexible in scheduling and duties
Proficient in email and basic electronic communication
Demonstrated integrity
Computer literacy: email, internet, and word processing
