Position Summary The Substation Designer – Physical (CAD Technician) plays an essential role in preparing detailed civil and physical electrical drawings for high-voltage utility substation projects and renewable energy interconnections. This position works closely with engineers and consultants to develop precise, high-quality drawings that support the successful completion of complex projects. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically skilled, and thrives in a collaborative environment focused on delivering excellence in design and engineering support.

Locations Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Austin, TX or Madison, WI

Job Functions

Create CAD designs for physical substation engineering deliverables, including general arrangements, plan and profile drawings, and detailed construction drawings.

Prepare plan and elevation views, grounding plans and details, foundation plans and details, and conduit or cable trough layouts.

Import tables and calculations, such as bills of materials, and incorporate relevant notes to ensure accuracy and clarity within each drawing.

Produce specialized detail drawings such as steel structure fabrication, concrete foundation, oil containment, metal grate platforms, and fire wall details (preferred).

Collaborate effectively with engineers and drafters to identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring consistency and precision across all design documents.

Conduct thorough self-reviews to verify drawing accuracy and completeness before submitting work for final review.

Assist in all phases of project delivery, including correspondence, documentation, and participation in project meetings as needed.

Coordinate across departments and disciplines to ensure seamless project execution and timely delivery.

Education and Experience

An associate degree in Design and Drafting Technology or a related field is required.

Minimum of 2 years of CAD experience with AutoCAD required.

3 or more years of CAD experience preferred, with demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD.

Experience with transmission, distribution, and substation design projects preferred.
