Job Summary National Design Manager – Aviation at JE Dunn Construction. This role reports to the National Aviation group.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design process from initial business development through project completion.

Coordinate and oversee the performance of the outside design firm on aviation projects.

Establish cost benchmarking and cost‑management strategies for the design team.

Develop and maintain design packaging schedules aligned with construction procurement milestones.

Facilitate coordination and collaboration between design and construction teams.

Maintain design and construction coordination accountability plans.

Perform peer reviews of drawing sets and final deliverables.

Interpret design‑build RFPs and develop work plans in collaboration with preconstruction, operations, and other stakeholders.

Create conceptual plans, elevations, and 3‑D models to support presentations and win strategies.

Ensure compliance with RFP specifications, applicable codes, and criteria through design deliverables.

Lead early‑phase due‑diligence activities, including permitting and jurisdictional requirements.

Manage outside design consultants, ensuring technical and schedule compliance.

Conduct design reviews and identify project risks and opportunities throughout the design phase.

Generate cost savings and value‑added solutions during the design phase.

Control partner and consultant costs, monitoring both project and design service expenses.

Provide quality control review comments to meet program specifications and life‑safety requirements.

Coordinate design document packaging strategies with the project team.

Manage project documentation, including proposals, drawings, specifications, reports, calculations, and shop drawings using 3‑D and 2‑D file management systems.

Develop price sketches and coordinate with VDC to implement projects as needed.

Deliver technical design guidance throughout the construction process.

Support the entire project life cycle—proposal, site survey, engineering, equipment selection, permitting, training, and construction.

Keep the design aligned with contractual budget and scope requirements.

Qualifications

Accurate, thorough, and timely work.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Effective presentation skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Thorough knowledge of project processes and how each supports successful completion.

Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.

Knowledge of Lean process and philosophy.

Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and/or SketchUp.

Experience with U.S. building design codes and material‑specific standards.

Familiarity with multiple design disciplines (Architectural, Structural, MEP, etc.).

Structured problem‑solving ability with creative solution development.

Budget and schedule management to maximize profitability.

Industry trend awareness and innovation knowledge.

Capable of managing cross‑functional teams and stakeholder expectations.

Career Path: Senior Design Manager.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering, or related field (Required).

Experience

8+ years of design and/or construction management experience (Preferred).

Cross‑functional knowledge of key engineering disciplines (Architectural, Structural, MEP, etc.).

Experience taking conceptual design through construction with internal and external partners.

Licensed Architect (Preferred).

DBIA credentials or multiple design‑build project experience (Preferred).

Working Environment

Valid, unrestricted driver’s license required.

Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.

May require extensive travel.

Must be willing to work non‑traditional hours to meet project needs.

May be exposed to extreme temperature conditions.

Assignment location may include project sites and/or office.

Typical activities: sitting, viewing screens, standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling.
